I am pleased to announce that the neighbourhood of Mount Pleasant has increased its population density by 500/km2 in only 2 years! The density of the neighbourhood has now surpassed 3000/km2! I am happy to have been part of that change.


The population of the Downtown Core (CBD, EV, WV) is now 13 000, with a population density of 11 660/km2. The population of the entire downtown, including CBD, EV, WV, Beltline, Mission, Eau Claire, and Chinatown, is 43 420.

Wow, some incredible numbers! Got to admit I didn't anticipate the number to be that high. Kudos to you guys who predicted close to 1.2m...

Useless but interesting stat of the day, Calgary now has almost the same civic population, and about the same population density, as the City of Dallas.

Any demographic/stats analysts out there - what could possibly explain the significantly higher number of girls between 0-4 (44,069 vs 36,969) and the significantly higher number of boys from 5-14 (70,301 vs 67,216)?

They ask one person in the household (randomly) how they got to work the last day they worked. So this part of the census is a random sample. The percentages matter more here than absolute numbers.

The core area population, including the aforementioned neighbourhoods south of the river, plus Inglewood, Sunnyside, Beltline, Bridgeland, Hillhurst, and West Hillhurst comes out to a total population of 70 000.

It's not that scientifically rigorous, but gives some idea of trends over time and between neighbourhoods.

These kinds of data tend to overlook behaviour of non-"normal" people too (seniors, retirees, children, expats, people disabilities, students, etc etc etc).

Ya, my wife got asked, and she had taken the bus the previous day due to rain, but usually rides her bike.

Quite the increase in pop per dwelling.

Interesting there are 411 converted dwellings, does anyone know if this includes both units in a house with a basement suite? Or does it only count the additional unit?

That being said, I've never considered Mission and the Beltline as downtown. Google maps, and a majority of the Internet, have it the same way:

There is an incredible amount of infill happening in Mount Pleasant: Mostly single bungalows to semi-detacheds (how do I pluralize that word, seriously?). I'll have to go back to the 2010 census to get the breakdowns from then, but the number of semi-d's will have increased substantially.

I agree they are not part of the CBD, That said...I personally consider Mission and Beltline to be part of "Downtown"

I'm not quite sure why you are arguing about whether the Beltline or Mission is considered "downtown" because I think this discussion is meaningless, but I want to point out that the first map that you linked to is a map of the +15 network in Calgary. The +15 does not extend into the Beltline or Mission which might explain why they might exclude those areas from said map.
