Apparently (from a connection) this is a major issue and will not be fixed by rush hour.

No ****, but still.

At least this gives commuters some time to prepare for alternate ways home today.

They should release this information now, to get a % of their riders to find alternatives. Hope they provide some ETA soon especially if it is after 5 or 6 PM.

That's not good. A second major system breakdown in as many weeks is a whole different matter than a one-off incident. I hope that Translink puts a serious bus bridge into effect since they have so many hours lead time before rush-hour. Call in the reserve drivers and get everything that rolls into service. I'm increasingly beginning to see value in the Canada Line being on a different system. There's some defense in depth for the transit system as a whole as a result.

Translink has only a certain number of spare buses so a major rush hour breakdown will cause major problems

Lots of buses being deployed from Surrey, this at the expense of many feeder routes. 96 is pretty much running every 15-20min right now, and several other feeder routes are seeing cancellations as a result.

CTrain operators and bus drivers are represented by the same union (along with Calgary Transit's heavy equipment techs and mechanics), but they are different jobs with different training, pay, and working conditions.

Translink is telling commuters to plan an alternate way home this afternoon.

Would you just need to touch that flat piece of metal in the guideway to get electrocuted or is the power somewhere else?

That would be the LIM rail, which is not powered by electricity. The danger is the power rail, which is on the right side of the track. Step on that, and you're toast!

Perhaps Translink should roll back to using OS/2 Warp again?
Skytrain seemed more reliable back then.

Actually, the power rails alternate between the two sides. They're almost always located on the far side of the track from platforms and walkways.

I strongly doubt that any of these significant failures have anything to do with the OS.

Is this a crowd from one Skytrain (behind the photog) passing another Skytrain on their way to the nearest station?

Fun times glad my wife isnt working today so I dont have to drive to bridgeport to get her in rush hour tunnel traffic.

That said, not often skytrain actually fails. The failure rate in other metro transit systems is probably about the same and most are even older than SkyTrain. I am also glad the system fail safes. Ok so people are inconvenienced but at least they are alive and the trains are not crashing. And our other systems like busses breaking down or car accidents disrupting the road network happen more frequently.

I do think people will question Translinks redundancies in the computer systems and age alone. I mean running OS2 up until 2012? Thats a bit excessive given it was out of date and unsupported 10 years earlier. Still for a nearing 30 year old system, it has been pretty reliable.

Normal rails = you're fine.
Third Rail = RIP.
LIM rail = you're fine.

Translink is just doing an awful job of communication.

They referred people to their Trip Planner website to make alternate plans - but it's completely overloaded and unusable. They then referred them to their telephone number, which is equally swamped.

Why they're not sending people to Google Maps, I have no idea.
