That being said, I see a thin box with a weird cantilever in the massing. I hope there is still going to be a crown.

A limestone building in NYC? Get out of here! What a blatant rip off!

In all seriousness though, other claims of plagiarism are unfounded also. Take for example the "two tower" design claimed to be a copy of 15 CPS. The site as bought for 220CPS happens to be conducive to just that. What should they have done? Left a giant hole in the street wall?

Stern is still designing the tower, I don't see it as bad news, although I loved the design in the renderings.

It's just silly. Sometimes an architect's work will resemble some of their earlier work. Imagine if someone complained every time Gehry designed a new building. And I don't see how either Vornado or the Zeckendorfs could have a problem with Stern. If the design was used to get financing, it wouldn't have been Stern's problem. And if the Zeckendorfts are outraged over the design, that's just petty. Stern is currently designing another tower for them (520 Park Ave) that will no doubt have some of the same charm of 15 CPW. But they can't corner that particular market or design.

Vornado Realty Trust is in talks with a Qatar sovereign-wealth fund to finance its planned 950-foot condominium tower on Central Park South in Manhattan, according to multiple people familiar with the talks.

The Qatar Investment Authority would provide hundreds of millions of dollars of financing for the tower that, like other condos rising in the area, would target the super-rich.

Qatar Investment Authority and Vornado declined to comment.

The deal, if completed, would help Vornado meet its goal of building the tower without putting in any additional money.

The company has reported spending about $510 million so far on the site and is digging its foundation. But land values have soared since it first purchased the site in 2005, allowing Vornado to draw on its value by borrowing against it.

"This project will self-finance," according to Steven Roth, Vornado's chief executive officer, in the company's annual shareholder letter last month.

Looks like they are slightly lower than the Nordstrom tower across the street.

COPYCATS: 15 Central Park West lookalikes pop up all over the city
Developers are trying to replicate the city's most successful building ever with classic stone designs

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery — and, in the real estate world, also the quickest path to riches.

How else to explain why developers — and the bankers who back them — are falling all over themselves to copy the success of 15 Central Park West, the hottest new condo building in the city in decades.

The retro-chic building, put up in 2007 by the Zeckendorf brothers and designed by Robert A.M. Stern, has at least three imitations going up right now, all designed by the starchitect.

"Developers keep hiring Stern in the hopes that he'll design something as successful as 15 Central Park West," said one real estate insider.

One of the copycats — a tower at 30 Park Pl. developed by Larry Silverstein — even seeks to extend the 15 CPW brand, aesthetic and prices to edgier downtown.

Silverstein’s building looks suspiciously like the home run condo project. It’s a bit taller but it has the striking white stone facade, identical branded awning and two potted evergreens, and long, narrow windows flanking a bronze entryway.

No surprise there; it’s designed by Stern, who is also the architect behind similarly stately 64-story tower at 220 Central Park South and and a 51-story tower at 520 Park Ave.

Stern’s copycat towers have stone facades and similar setbacks. And a gated courtyard with a central fountain seen in renderings for 220 Central Central Park South looks almost identical to the one at 15 Central Park West.

Developers can't be blamed for wanting to replicate 15 Central Park West, which, by most measures, is the most successful project ever in the city and has been home to celebs like Denzel Washington, Sting and Yankee slugger A-Rod. One apartment sold there for a record $88 million in 2011.

Buyers paid more money per square foot for apartments at 15 CPW last year than at any other building at the city. And when the Zeckendorfs used Stern to design a similarly traditional condo conversion project at 18 Gramercy Park two years ago, the project was so successful that Leslie Alexander, owner of the Houston Rockets, paid $42 million for the penthouse.

Insiders told the Daily News that the Zeckendorfs, who are behind 520 Park Ave., have been miffed by the similiarities in the design of 220 Central Park South because of its proximity to their original tower. Vornado Realty Trust, the developer of the tower, declined to comment, as did the Zeckendorfs.

It wouldn't be the first time developers have locked horns over similar designs for luxury condos.

Donald Trump sued fellow developer Morton Olshan in the 1980s when architect Philip Birnbaum allegedly designed a replica of a Trump building for Olshan. That dispute was settled out of court.

Actually, I like this design myself.
No wonder everyone's trying to replicate it!

The Real Deal reporting the height at 1031 ft- seems like a rookie mistake since that number comes from the altitude + the building height, correct?

That was discussed earler. That is a height elevation, though Vornado didn't correct that on current applications. You can see it on elevation drawings however.

Foundation Work Begins at 225 West 57th Street and 220 Central Park South

Quote:
Robert A.M. Stern is designing the 950′ and 65-story tower, which promises to make a significant impact on the skyline when viewed from Central Park. Wednesday’s reveal of the future cityscape showed the building’s prominence, and while it will be completely obscured from the south by Extell’s 225 West 57th Street, views to the north and west will be comprehensive, likely commanding the highest asking prices among any condominium developments in New York City.

The latest construction photos also come with fresh zoning diagrams filed with the Department of Buildings, which give a first look at the component fronting Central Park South, which has been dubbed “The Villas,” and will be defined by a series of minor setbacks before topping-out 17 floors above street level; its net scope will measure 57,713 square feet, while the larger tower will total 414,349 square feet.

This building certainly is under construction and therefore should be moved.

Yes, I walked by earlier this week, and this should be listed as u/c.

I can't imagine the prices on this one. The price per square foot should match or top really any condo building anywhere.

I hear through a business contact that marketing for this tower is beginning very shortly.

I'm very interested to see the pricing on this one. I think this will break records.
