Emporis updated the New York section. According to the database, there are 143 skyscrapers under construction, and 115 planned. I think in the next year or so, we may be the construction capital of North America.

The city has 696 skyscrapers, and 5,813 high-rises once I reduced the number for the unbuilt and only counted complete. Thats a total of 6509.

When all of the current projects UC finish, that will be 6652.

If the current proposals go through, and keep in mind that it will change as a highrise gets proposed every day or so (13 stories or greater), that number will be over 6800. Which will be much higher by the end of 2017 or 2018 as the affordable housing plan and the city continues to boom.

^ Nice stats. The city is experiencing a massive boom, even greater than the one in the 1920s/30s.
What's still missing is a real signature tower. The limit for residential towers seems to be around 1,400ft, same with office towers. Just take a look at the Hudson Yards: we are getting a plateau of supertalls, but none will really stick out.
Some figures (to the roof):
- Hudson Spire, ~1,200ft
- 30 Hudson Yards, 1227ft
- Silverstein's 520 West 41st Street, 1100ft
- 50 Hudson Yards, 1070ft
- The Girasole, 1050ft
- 35 Hudson Yards, 1000ft (likely to exceed 1,100ft).
- Manhattan West Towers, both ~1,000ft

And not to mention the countless 900, 800 and especially 700 footers. This is all very good, but that part of the skyline won't have a real peak. What the city needs is a solid 1,600 - 1,700 foot tall tower to the roof, topped out by a nice spire. That would be the icing on the cake.

Furthermore there will be another plateau: 57th street.
Some figures (to the roof):
- 217 West 57th Street, 1424ft
- 432 Park Avenue, 1397ft
- 111 West 57th Street, 1350ft
- Shvo Central Park Tower, ~1,300ft
- One57, 1,005ft

Again, no real peak. And funny enough, 1WTC and 2WTC are very close in height too. I know that I'm spoiled. But still, the city desperately needs a tower which will soar above all the others.

Breaking news!!!

1,479ft roof & 1,775ft spire

Nordstrom Tower to Become World’s Tallest Residential Building at 1,775 Feet

Quote:
YIMBY has the latest drawings of Nordstrom Tower, courtesy of an anonymous tipster close to the project. Scoping documents also include the actual height numbers: 225 West 57th Street‘s facade will top-out 1,479′ above street level, while a surprise spire on top will cap the tower at 1,775 feet. Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill are designing the building.

1st page has been updated. If the Hudson Spire gets a height boost (not likely at this moment with 61 floors), the city could become home of 3 500m+ towers.

HURRAY!!

I wonder if the Mayor's pro-development rhetoric played a role in the height increase.

Why would the mayor's affordable housing push have anything to do with design considerations for luxury towers?

This is an as-of-right tower that doesn't have anything to do with the current mayoral administration.

Another scoop by YIMBY:

Quote:
If my sources are correct this may not be the tallest residential tower for long.
If another tower indeed breaks the 1,776 foot mark, I'll be in skyscraper heaven. Hopefully the roof is over 1,640ft/500m.

PS: my guess is Wanda or Shvo.

I'm thinking that this plateau is actually good for the skyline. The reason I say this is because with a 1300 to 1400 ft plateau, and now Nordstrom, the skyline is experiencing increased height, but without something that makes it look bad like a lone supertall in the 1800 or 1900 ft range without a buffer such as something that is 400m or so. SLowly but surely, a pyramid effect is occurring or almost like a triangle of increasing height depending on the angle that its being viewed. If you look at Dubai as an example, the Burj Khalifa sticks out. Nothing even comes close to it. In terms of aesthetics, I think towers that are close to the tallest make a skyline look more natural. Even Lower Manhattan, the WTC1 sticks out. Makes everything look tiny. That of course will change once WTC3, and 2 are finished, along with the surrounding 850-900+ towers are finished. It adds a natural look to the skyline. Likewise for Hudson Yards, even if the Hudson Spire isn't a supertall thats over 450m, something in the 1400-1500 ft range would balance everything out. But, I have a feeling that will be the next big thing. 61 floors can go a long way with the proper floor height, base design, and architectural elements such as a spire. Time will tell...

^ I strongly support natural growth. Hence I agree that New York should build a couple of 1,300 - 1,400ft tall tower first. Then we need a nice 1,600 - 1,700ft tall singature tower to the roof.

New York City's Nordstrom Tower May Become World’s Tallest Residential Building
New York City, United States – 09 July 2014

Quote:
New York YIMBY has acquired the latest drawings of Nordstrom Tower, courtesy of an anonymous tipster close to the project. Scoping documents also include the actual height numbers: 225 West 57th Street’s facade will reach 1,477 feet (450 meters) above street level, while a surprise spire on top will cap the tower at 1,775 feet (541 meters). Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture is designing the building.

New York City’s skyscraper boom is entering unparalleled territory, and 225 West 57th Street could very well represent the crest of the current wave, assuming the tower is financed. The new height details could result in several superlatives: New York City would finally retake the “tallest roof” in the United States title from Chicago’s Willis Tower, which stands 1,451 feet (442 meters), and 225 West 57th Street would become the tallest residential building in the world, surpassing both 432 Park Avenue in New York (426 meters) and Mumbai’s World One Tower (442 meters), which are both scheduled for completion in 2015. Also on the horizon are the 106 Tower (433 meters) in Dubai and the Diamond Tower (432 meters) in Jeddah, which are anticipated to open in 2017. Currently, the tallest completed residential tower in the world is the Princess Tower (413 meters) in Dubai.

Structural drawings indicate the curtain wall will be accompanied by steel fins and aluminum louvers, and the result should become a contemporary icon on the Manhattan skyline. Otie O’Daniel created 3D models of the tower based on the drawings and schematics, which give better insight into the building’s eventual appearance — though the images are not official renderings.

While the Nordstrom Tower’s roof height will be the tallest in the Western Hemisphere, its pinnacle will fall one foot (305 Millimeters) shy of One World Trade Center’s, which begs the question of whether Extell could – or would - simply add a few dozen feet to 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 the crown.

Completion of 225 West 57th Street is currently slated for 2018, and the most recent permits — which were partially approved on July 1st — reveal a total scope of over 1.2 million square feet (110,000 square meters).

For more on this story, go to New York YIMBY.

OMG, this Nordstrom Tower is strikingly modern and beautiful!

A future classic... for sure. Is it final, greenlighted, financed?

^ It still needs financing, but that shouldn't be a big problem. Last year Barnett asked a Chinese bank for a $1bn loan ... http://www.globalconreview.com/news/new-york-developer-asks-china-1bn/

A slew of super-sized office buildings are set to rise in Manhattan over the next several years, punctuating the city’s skyline with new spires of glass. Towers with over 10 million square feet of class A space – at the World Trade Center, Hudson Yards and Midtown proper – are either under construction or looking for tenants and financing.
