Is the old tower used for anything? Auxiliary control? Storage? A really cool lunch room/lounge for staff?

The old tower is used as an office for our Airport Duty Managers. These folks are on duty 24 hours/day every day.
I've yet to get any traction on the idea of a revolving restaurant on top of the old tower. Still working on it, tho.

That would be AMAZING.

It's not surprising really - gives the airline a chance to give the crews some real time training while still breaking her in for the eventual main route it would run on (Toronto to Tokyo Haneda).

Quite a significant capacity increase for AC during the weekends though - where they tend to down shift everything to those horrible E90 aircraft (with the exception of a couple well timed flights like the inbound LHR (AC861) which turns around and becomes a flight to Toronto).

Seats are still available - odd the routing back in the late evening though. Can't imagine enough ppl would fill the flight arriving back into Toronto at 11pm?

It is different now, but I'm not sure how much better it is. The low ceilings over the check-in counters, which I am guessing cannot be easily changed, really set the tone for the space, and not in a good way.

Yeah I think they did a pretty good job with what they had to work with. FYI there really aren't any check-in counters anymore, only kiosks and automated baggage drop off machines.

I flew out on Thursday, I was struck by just how different it felt. Felt much larger and more open. Used the automated kiosks and baggage handling. Was all very smooth. Still a handful of check-in desks, but way more kiosks than there used to be.

True enough - I think there are offices above which may make it hard to raise that piece of the ceiling. All the natural light from that new facade should help... I haven't been to a check in counter in years, I always check in online (only carry on), and go straight to security, so I'm not sure that I'll see the changes in person... maybe I'll go early and check this end of the terminal out before my next flight.

From the posted images, it looks like they've mitigated the low ceilings as well as could be expected. Perception in person is always more nuanced though.

Improvements to Airport Roadways Underway

Source

POSTED ON JULY 14, 2014

Minimal Impact on Airport Passengers and Visitors

Halifax, N.S. – Work has started on a project to upgrade the roadway system at Halifax Stanfield International Airport. The new configuration will improve traffic safety and wayfinding, reduce congestion and increase the road network capacity.

“Improving our road system is vital as we continue to grow and advance Halifax Stanfield, one of Atlantic Canada’s most critical pieces of transportation infrastructure,” says Joyce Carter, Halifax International Airport Authority (HIAA) President & CEO. “These changes will improve the flow of traffic for passengers, visitors and airport workers while enabling future roadway development to support growth on airport property.”

Preliminary work began this past April with tree-clearing.

The roadway project itself was awarded to Brycon Construction of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, following a competitive tendering process.

Construction started recently and work will continue throughout the remainder of 2014, then start up again in the spring of 2015, with project completion scheduled for mid-year 2015. Total funding for the project is $21 million.

The work will be completed in phases to minimize impacts to traffic.

Highlights of the Project

• Create a new one-way loop road system with multiple lanes to support free flowing traffic by minimizing lane changes, reducing congestion, and increasing capacity for growing traffic demand
• Eliminate intersections and crossover turning movements, allowing more time for decision making and improving roadway safety
• Simplify directional signs
• Improve access to current and future facilities and amenities on airport property

Looks like there's going to be, among other things a new one-way road put in behind the gas station?

Yeah looks like Bell Blvd. will be a one-way multi-lane expressway to and from the 102 like a lot of other major airports.

Without the graphic, I'd think this referred to the addition of over/underpasses.

I have never understood the rationale for the sort of awning frame thing I see overhanging the sidewalk in the picture. It looks like they started to build a shelter over the sidewalk and never finished it. These are becoming more and more common, yet in our climate make zero sense. Cover them with Lexan or some such thing and give us shelter from the rain and snow!

In this case it's a cheap homage to Dulles airports terminal from the 60's but it doesn't quite take flight

I don't believe these either, I came back from Florida very late in the evening on a very cold blustery, snowing evening and had to wait outside for a shuttle to the Airport Hotel under this "awning" . It is totally useless and should supply more coverage than it does.
