Great point!

OC Transpo Transitway buses use the parkway between Dominion and Lincoln Fields under an agreement they made with the NCC some time ago. I have no idea what the details of that agreement are, but I imagine OC is paying the NCC for it, in which case OC would save money off the termination of the agreement with the LRT opening.

The only shocker in that article to me is that Jacquelin Holzman reads the Sun.

The NCC can take their demands for compensation and shove it. Then shove it further up.

The NCC asking for compensation to run a handful of buses down a small stretch of a 4-lane roadway that seen hundreds of thousands of cars a day is like a political consultant billing taxpayers for the Splenda in his morning coffee because Starbucks didn't have it and he had to go to the store. Go to hell.

This would make a good set for a sci-fi/alien movie The tunnel looks like it's been chewed out by giant ants

Does anyone know what they are going to do with the central access shaft? Will they just fill it in, or will it be used for ventilation, emergency access or something else?

It must have taken quite a bit of prep work, but those station caverns are taking quite a bit of time. After 2 months working on it Jawbreaker's only 15% done with carving out Lyon station.

The plans call for each roadheader to spent 18 months on each station. Parliament & Lyon will be fully excavated by fall 2015, Rideau by spring 2016.

I came across this article that goes into a little more depth into the cause of the sinkhole earlier in the year.

Roadheaders claw away at downtown LRT tunnel, now roughly 30 per cent complete

Andrew Nguyen, Ottawa Citizen
Published on: July 7, 2014, Last Updated: July 7, 2014 8:38 PM EDT

Digging on a 2.5-kilometre downtown tunnel that will connect Lyon, Parliament and Rideau stations by light-rail transit is roughly 30 per cent complete.

The work is being done by three 135-tonne “roadheaders” named Jawbreaker, Chewrocka and Crocodile Rouge, which have been tasked with eating away at the rock beneath downtown Ottawa, with their rotating heads of 78 teeth made of tungsten carbide — an extremely hard metal.

Mayor Jim Watson said the corridor, which is a key part of the Confederation Line project, is expected to reach the halfway mark some time in late summer. A Spanish-led team has a $2.1-billion contract to complete the current phase.

(Click for a larger version of this image)

In order to complete the downtown tunnel, crews have split the job into three sections: the west portal, central shaft and east portal. The three “roadheaders” were shipped to Ottawa in pieces from New York and Austria, and they were assembled on site.

In the west, Jawbreaker was the first to break ground. It has made the most progress, clawing its way to 441 metres of tunnel, and has been advancing east under Queen Street, near Lyon Street.

Chewrocka, which is in the middle of the action, entered through the central shaft at Kent Street and Queen Street. It has dug 251 metres of tunnel. Work on the cavern for Parliament station is expected to begin shortly.

In the east, near the University of Ottawa, Crocodile Rouge began digging west toward Rideau station and it is expected to link up with the others in the central shaft. It is currently advancing north under Laurier Street.

PDF of scheduled 2014 Confederation Line construction.

http://www.confederationline.ca/wp-conte...14-Confederation-Line-Look-Ahead_ENG.pdf

Take a look at page 3, Central Segment. It mentions "utility relocations" for the west entrance of Lyon station, for the west, central and east entrance of Parliament station and demolition of existing building for the east entrance of Rideau station.

Interesting enough that we are already looking at prep work for station entrances, but what really captures my attention is the demolition of existing building for the east Rideau entrance. Does this mean the craptastic Scotiabank building will be completely replaced? Lets hope so!

Hey, it looks like Hurdman station is going to start construction 3 months early (relative to the original project schedule).

Also, 417 traffic apparently shifting over later this month. That surprises me. While there are large sections of the new lanes that are finished, there are some that look like they need more than a few weeks to finish... but who knows.
