The best reason I can think of is that the "new" garage was simply repurposing the existing Times basement. The entire shape is the same including that extra chunk at the back, and if they were building a new structure there's no reason not to build it larger and eliminate that extended corner. On Hunter's shot I can see what appears to be a bit of wall sticking up above the top of the remaining basement. Like they tore down the building but left that little bit of first floor wall as it was going to be under the lawn anyway.

Despite its use as a garage, I'm betting it was still originally the Times basement.

I am in complete agreement. As the original times building was destroyed in the 1910 bombing incident, it would make sense that the new and lager times building would have been constructed to withstand any future agitation attempts. The foundation and below grade walls were probably designed to withstand any future attempts.

The garage for the State building obviously used the foundation walls of the expanded times building site to save costs. The angular shape of the garage walls matches the layout of the times building.

A view months ago I noticed that the outdoor escalators at the Beverly Center have been enclosed in glass.

When I first moved to L.A. (from Illinois and it's cold winters mind you) I was amazed with these HUGE escalators
on the outside of the building.

OOPS. Memories can be tricky. Here's a photograph from 1982 (the year I moved to L.A.), and the escalators were actually enclosed
in glass. I would have bet money that they were open air.

Thanks much! Putting a map like this together has been on my mind for a while, but I wanted at least the 3rd book out before I did anything about it. Personally, I'm fairly map-oriented in my own reading--I like to know where places actually are so I thought this might help my readers and anyone interested in "back in the day" LA & Hollywood...such as the fine folks who follow this amazing thread.

I'm guessing it's somewhere along the northern end of Fickett Street where the street does a jog or two.

Fickett Street has been mentioned only once before on noirish Los Angeles,
in GW's post on the original buildings at Theodore Roosevelt High School.

Because I am so dedicated to photographing DTLA, here are some images from this morning at the State Building Foundation site.

It looks like the outline we thought was the LA Times building may have just been this 2-story underground parking garage. But if thats the case, why does it have the interesting layout? You guys would know better than I.

Thanks so much for going! I'm cruising through all of the pics right now. I'm not versed in building techniques so I can't tell, but maybe someone else can - is there anything in the pics that would date any part of that structure to 1912 rather than 1939?

There are a series of pictures related to slums. Fickett Hollow was treated the same as Ann St. The city forced it to be cleared, but I don't recall a project to rebuild in the same area.

LAPL is buggy tonight. But when you get a chance, search for images 33519 - 33725. I think 33663 is another shot from Fickett Hollow

Incidentally, I hope I'm not the only one who thinks the new LA Times site design is absolute garbage. It's irritating in the extreme, with dead space on the sides, stuff popping out at inopportune times just because you put your mouse cursor in the wrong spot, and a never-ending scroll that adds to the bottom and subtracts from the top so you never get to the bottom of a page, among other problems. It took me several minutes just to figure out how to contact them to tell them something.

Yes, the post-bombing Los Angeles Times building was built stronger than its predecessor:

The post-bombing 1912 building had a basement and sub-basement, perfect for repurposing into a two-story subterranean parking garage:

So the 1912 basement and sub-basement walls have survived until now, with the 1938 parking structure built within them, correct?

The only thing that doesn't quite add up is why the 1938 drawing of the parking structure shows the long part of the eastern wall at an angle (http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showpost.php?p=6636020&postcount=22274), when that part of the eastern wall of the Times building was straight (parallel with Broadway). That angled wall would seem to have to start under the building to the east of the Times building on 1st Street.

P.S. Also in regard to that 1938 drawing, it shows the upper parking level 19 feet high, and the lower parking level just under 9 feet. Would the pressroom, described in the 1911 article as being located in the basement/upper parking level, need to be 19 feet high? The answer to that might determine if what's being demolished now includes the entire Times building basement (walls and floors).
