I'm pretty sure it said in that master plan document (pg 78) that those blocks are in the Temple Square District, which has a restricted height zone to protect views of temple square. "Temple Square view corridor, additional height not allowed" is what the map says. Probably won't be able to build a 1000+ room hotel right there unless you make it 10 stories and completely cover at least one block... probably not going to happen.

San Antonio just announced a proposed new tallest mixed use tower. 400k office space and 300 residential units. Not sure how many floors at this point.

God damn. At least affordable residential is a priority in Downtown arising and the 2015 Master Plan so it looks like we may be set for residential, although within farther areas (granary) and most are gravitating towards low rise.

Great things are happening in Salt Lake, but our skyline is still moving at a snail's pace compared to a great deal of equalish cities. It's discouraging. Every time I see Austin's skyline, especially compared to where it was in 2004, I get so jealous. Never liked San Antonio's, but I can see them having a similar Austin-like boom and turning their skyline into something impressive.

Yeah, San Antonio's isn't super impressive, especially for the population, but it's going to get a big boost with this new tower.

Downtown Austin is incredible. I couldn't believe how much construction was going on downtown.

2. 151 State 20-stories
3. CCH ( most likely our new tallest )
4. Air Hotel 14-stories
5. The Cascade 19-stories

All of these could come online by 2018 ( four years from now )

Plus we have four new highrises that are still five years or newer.....

1. 222 South Main 2009
2. 99 West 2011
3. The Regent 2011
4. Courthouse 2014

I think if we get a developer to include office space and residential also within the hotel we can get a new tallest - 25 floors for hotel, 15 for office, 5 residential, with hotel being in the middle and office being in the bottom, this brings it to 45 floors.

25 for hotell space would be pretty pitiful. I'm expecting at least 30.. Hopfully closer to 40.

The apartment building on 600 west is looking pretty good. It's to bad the have to paint a mural on it that looks like those candles that Catholics burn. :/

I'm surprised there is no releasing info or website yet.. I would be interested to see the floor plans.

Well, how many rooms per floor? That's assuming 25 per floor... I don't know much about hotels though so that may be accurate. If so, we could balloon it to a 55 story skyscraper. All we need is a developer that says "we want this" and so this point we could just forget a mere 5 of residential and build a different property.

One thing to consider is that the residential would have to be affordable and therefore lower down or cascade won't get built.

Also, from transit thread:

Proposal : S 2nd East get renamed to S Civic Parkway throughout the whole route, 5th W to get renamed to Union Parkway throughout the whole route, 9th South to get renamed to Eccles Parkway until S Guardsman Way, S Guardsman Way to get renamed to Eccles Parkway in correlation to 9th south / Eccles Parkway, 5th South to get renamed to either Cesar Chaves Parkway or a new name, 6th south to get renamed to Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway or a different name (Rosa Parks Parkway is a shorter name although this presumes 2nd east drops honorary name), South Temple to keep name due to historical value or gain honorary name like South Temple Parkway.

EDIT: Get rid of the North Temple Boulevard bullshit. It's not a boulevard and it never will be. It's North Temple, damn it!

Considering I haven't driven by lately, I am going to assume that the artist already has started painting and thus the basis of you comment....If not, I believe that it was already discussed that the Virgin Mother was not actually the art piece that was going to be on the building. The developers just really liked it and wanted the artist to do something for them, so it might still be catholic looking but not all of their work is catholic related. They have some this artist work in the New Adobe building and it is pretty impressive. I am excited to see what it will be. Especially since the Mestizo cafe and Rudy's artistic influence is very prevalent on the west side.

They've never said that image was going to be what was on the building. Even if it is, are you so closed-minded or fearful that you can't accept art that represents a culture that might be different from your own? Every time this building is mentioned, you go off on the same hateful rant, and it makes you come across as awfully anti-Catholic, if nothing else. I'm excited that the developer wants to include art of any kind as part of their building; if nothing else than to add another color to the palette of what can be an awfully drab city.

I'm not closed minded at all. Most of my family is catholic and I attended Catholic Church as a child.. With that said Iv always thought the candles were over the top and don't care to see that type of art blown up on the sides of buildings. I'm fully aware that the rendering is not the actual art.. But it is the actual artist.. And I honestly can't stand his other mural over by Estes Pizza.... I'm willing to bet it ends up being more of the same.. But we will see.

I'm not at all apposed to art or culture... I'm only apposed to tacky art and cultre.. The artist's other mural is not artistic... It looks like he copied one of those cheap catholic candles.. That's all I'm saying.

Just as I'm not looking forward to any more transformer movies made by Michael Bay.. I'm also not looking forword to any more murals by this particular artist... But maybe he will break his own mold and do somthing different.

Gateway is a sad place.. There are over 50 empty stores.. I've counted them my self.. The theater is one of the worst in the state. It has outdated sound system and screens, inferior 3D, the seats have not been changed since the place opens, they don't even have access to the iMax any more.. Gateway had better come up with a serious redevelopment plan before a new theater is built down town.. Cuz that is probably the main thing bringing buisness in right now.

The depot and Esa is so much more inviting and safe looking then a trashy apartment building, transient camps, some lofts and a convinence store. 200 south could be nice.. But no one is willing to do anything about the problems on the street.. So it probably never will be.. Just as the west rip [rio] grand probably never will be.. I'm not going anywhere near west rio grand with all the druggies and crap back there.

Sorry ajuiO, but your us vs. them mentality is grating on me.

A few corrections:

The COUNTY owns and operates the Salt Palace, not the City. Please refer to the correct body, otherwise why would we take anything you say with any sort or relevance.

The convention space and parking within the CCH, is supposed to operated by the County as part of the Salt Palace Convention Center. Thus contiguous space with the existing space makes the only logical sense. It's hard to say we have this much convention space in our convention center, but really we don't because you have to leave the building, cross a wide street to enter the other part of it. The Salt Palace needs more space and the County wants to pay for it after the fact, thus the TIF financing method that is being used. Developer pays for it up front, the County gets the benefits right away then pays the developer back.


The Shilo has started it's remodel, they haven't started with the exterior yet, but they have started with the interior. They have one of those construction trash tubes coming off an upper floor on the SE corner. So it's a safe bet that the Shilo site is out of the conversation for the CCH.
