Calgary and Edmonton are both about the same level of driness, but Calgary gets the most rain in June vs July for Edmonton which could be the reason for the difference. I'm actually surprised at how "green" Calgary's shots are; usually long-range cityscape shots are very yellow/brown and catch a lot of dust in the air.

Calgary is a fair bit drier than Edmonton (326 mm average yearly rainfall vs 366 mm), with the vast majority of it falling in the late spring and early summer, while Edmonton's rain is very spread out in comparison. The Calgary aerials were all taken at different times, the first one in September, the second one in late October, and the last two on the same day in late September. All images on the stock aerial site have dates on the page. Calgary's extra green-ness in the pics is due to an above average rainy summer last year.

Btw, here's an awesome Edmonton shot, from late September 2013.

Pretty nice view from the penthouse of the soon-to-be-built Modello tower in Burnaby.

Definitely different times of the season. Not much difference in time...maybe 3 or 4 weeks. but the Calgary pics were taken in the fall, as most of the trees are light green/yellow.
Edmonton gets more precip, but the too cities are pretty the same when it comes to grass and trees greening/yellowing.

There is still a lot of highrise potential there on Yonge Street, at street level you wouldn't know it, but when you can see from above there are a lot of low-rise redevelopment opportunities along the strip.

Thanks for the info!

(In those pics, Edmonton was way greener than I'd have expected, Calgary about what I'd have expected...)

Edmonton is on the outskirts of the boreal forest. If you drive 45 minutes east of Edmonton (or 1.5 hours south) the trees stop.

The boreal forest begins something like 45 minutes west and 1.5 hours north of Edmonton.
