Hmm...

The design is nice for a retrofit, but I'd prefer some way of making the old roof match that of the new for some consistency.

Also, isn't the addition to the entrance on the Broadway South side a little counter productive given that there's going to be a giant column right in front of it? I mean, I would understand more if the entrance was angled east or if the columns were like to the side in an n shape, but certainly not in this current iteration.

What about the redevelopment of the Safeway site? Is that not happening or just not included in the render?

It seems silly if both projects go ahead but there's no integration. Really that developer should foot the bill...

Why should the developer pay for the station upgrade? Any CACs contributed from redeveloping the site would go to the city and not translink, I highly doubt the city doesn't have it's own ideas on what to spend that money on and would instead turn it over to Translink.
I agree though it should be done at the same time the site is redeveloped, but seeing how that Grandview-Woodlands plan was scuttled I don't see the site being redeveloped for a few more years.

The plan looks great, just one question - why is there a secondary flow allowed to disembark from Expo WB onto the old central platform? It seems to me that they should completely remove WB people from the old central platform - maybe even put up a fence next to the WB trains - so we would have one large dedicated platform for each Expo track.

The dual platforms is so that people going downtown from millennium line will have a dedicated platform to releave the crowding not he centre platform. people getting off at broadway inbound will still use the centre platform for disembarking.

Retaining use of the centre platform also allows use of excess platform capacity.
The outbound Broadway platform probably isn't packed in the mornings, so why not use that space for inbound train passengers?

[PS - Toronto is keeping each platform separate with its new Union Station platform using a glass wall, but the flows at Union Station would be more even in both directions]

when i used the train from broadway last week, the train that arrived there said this is a main street train so i along with others waited on the platform for a downtown train, than an actual attendant was there and asked me if i was going downtown and i said yes and he said you can use this train so i got on and got downtown, but a lot of other people at least a dozen, just stood on the platform, seems like this main street and not stopping at main street is confusing a lot of people

the main street station though is really nice and bright, will be great when its all done

I've just noticed that the lighting in the new Main Street station is oddly respectful to how the original lighting was setup using narrow strips of fluorescent lights. I wonder if this was intentional or not.

Sobeys Inc. confirmed Thursday morning it is closing about 50 underperforming stores following its takeover last year of Safeway Canada as the grocer races to slash costs amid burgeoning competition.

It said the retrenchment, 60 per cent of which is in Western Canada, will result in restructuring costs of $169.8-million and are included in selling and administrative expenses in its fourth quarter, whose results it released on Thursday.

Probably not, but if the station expansion forces Sobey's to throw money at a renovation then that may tilt the balance. I guess we'll find out eventually.

I would expect the Collingwood location (Kingsway/Tyne) to be a potential closure. Broadway/Commercial is always crazy busy. No way they would let that go.

Kingsway and Joyce does quite well too, I don't think we'll see too many store closures within Vancouver although we might see some revolving closures with a few stores set to be redeveloped over the next several years. I would pen Kingsway and Royal Oak as one that could be closed and not reopened.

Translink's Buzzer Blog says the Safeway is staying open event during construction:

We'll have to wait until Sept 8th to see what is really going to happen, apparently as that's when the Development Permit board meeting for the Broadway station is:
