I think you're being too specific. If it wasn't parking it would be something else. The parking is an easy target as it is in the headline, so they don't even have to read the story.

East Village wasteland sees huge spike in construction

East Village literally rising from the ground

CALGARY - For years, East Village, directly east of City Hall, was an urban wasteland with grand dreams for development.

And for many years, those dreams never materialized - until now.

Under the guidance of the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation, East Village is now a hotbed of activity with numerous cranes signalling that this development, which will eventually house 11,000 people as well as office, retail, and civic and cultural space, is well on its way to fruition.

Michael Brown, president and chief executive of CMLC, filled the Herald in on the current state of construction there for some of the projects.

Residential Condos

The master plan calls for 13 residential buildings on the 20-hectare site. The residential component of the overall development will take up 63 per cent of the total space in East Village.

Brown said two condos are currently under construction.

The Fuse tower, by Embassy Bosa, which will have 203 units in 20 storeys, has 12 floors up from the ground. It is scheduled to open in the spring of 2015.

The First tower, by FRAM+Slokker, which will have 190 units in 18 storeys, is about two storeys up from the ground. It is scheduled to be completed for the summer of 2015.

National Music Centre

The old King Eddy Hotel, at the corner of 9th Avenue and 4th Street S.E., was taken down brick by brick earlier this year to make room for the new 160,000-square-foot National Music Centre. Those bricks will be part of the new development.

“It’s flying. You can see the progress. Construction is going incredibly well. We’re very impressed with how their site is going ahead,” said Brown, adding completion is expected in the summer of 2016.

Central Library

The multi-million dollar new Central Library, to be located directly behind City Hall, is still a few years away but plans are moving forward.

“We’re at the point where we’ll be able to share a design with the marketplace in the fall,” said Brown.

“We’ve started the encapsulation of the LRT and in mid-July you’ll actually see a lot more progress on site in terms of that work taking place.”

Hilton Hotel

A Hilton Hotel of more than 300 rooms is planned for the corner of 7th Avenue and 4th Street S.E. The 14-storey building will be on the same block as the historic St. Louis Hotel.

“We’re about a week away from them starting to mobilize on site. And then you’ll see construction start. Their construction will go extremely fast. I think you’ll be looking at 16 months,” said Brown.

Retail

Retail developer RioCan has plans for a site at the corner of 4th Street and 6th Avenue S.E. that would include a grocery store and numerous retailers in about 300,000 square feet.

Brown said CMLC is still waiting to see what the developer’s vision is for that site that bridges East Village to the downtown core.

Simmons Building

The historic Simmons Building will become a culinary hub. Renovations are currently underway to eventually house Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters, Sidewalk Citizen Bakery and Charbar, a restaurant.

“The Simmons renovations are going very, very well. The community is obviously very interested. We are looking at that being open to the public in spring of next year,” said Brown.

Bridges

Brown said St. Patrick’s bridge, connecting the island to the northern banks of the Bow River on Memorial Drive, will open in October.

Also, the Elbow River Traverse, a 63-metre link connecting the west bank of the Elbow River at Fort Calgary to the east bank in Inglewood, will be open in August.

Both will facilitate pedestrian and bicycle traffic in the area.

That is a nice update, it would be awesome if they did a monthly update on activity in the area. Probably just me being impatient but I was hoping that the RioCan site would be getting a start sooner rather than later, but from the sounds of it they are still working on a plan.

Not sure why they left out the 270 unit Pulse tower. Last time I checked they were about 85% sold and already starting to poke above grade.

Yeah, I think they only mentioned the two that are already well above ground, to them "visible construction" is what constitutes "under construction"... Pulse is the tallest tower yet either proposed or under way in the East Village, so it certainly deserves attention, especially now that it's rising

16 months to build up the EV Hilton? That's ambitious and I like it! Another crane for the EV this year

How can 13 residential buildings house 11,000 people? With way about 250 units / 400 people per tower, EV will only achieved about half that figure. Maybe they are counting the "daytime population", which would include workers and shoppers.

I believe that number is new building, plus the existing population. If memory serves me correctly, I believe East Village boundaries include areas west to Centre Street and north to Riverfront Ave. I could be wrong though...

There will certainly be more than 13 residential buildings. That must be mixed up. Likely they have sites sold already that will accommodate 13 residential buildings, contributing toward an ultimate build out that would see 11,000 residents.

East Village only includes 3 Street SE to the Elbow River, Bow River to the Train Tracks, about a half sq. km.

The existing population of the East Village is approx. 3 000. It will be quite easy to fit 8 000 people into 13 residential buildings, though there will be more residential buildings than that anyways. The population density of the village, once it reaches the intended target population of 11 000, will be 22 000/ km2. Pretty impressive, and will be one of the densest neighbourhoods in the country.

I think it is pretty easy to spin numbers when you're cutting areas down to such miniscule sizes. Let's now make an area the size of the footprint of one residential building and claim we're more dense than kawloon walled city.

Well that is the size of the neighbourhood, and the borders of it are clearly defined. One side is the block-and-a-half wide megalithic wall that is City Hall, another is the train tracks, and the two others are rivers. So I really have no clue what you're bitching about. Also, the Kowloon Walled City no longer exists, and the East Village will not be anywhere near as dense as the walled city, hardly even a fraction (it was 1.25 million/ km² - 33 000 people on 0.026 km²)

Maybe they just mean 13 residential developments, some of which have multiple towers?

I thought there was a rumor of two forty storey towers coming to EV close to the tracks, is that dead?

There are several privately owned parcels in EV. Maybe the 13K figure includes what speculatively might be built on those.

Risked life and limb the other day and headed down to the East Village to take some photos. Luckily for me, besides me taking a piss behind the washrooms the below pic is the only other crime I witnessed.

Seriously, the CMLC and The City should be ashamed of themselves for closing those washrooms. Even if their bullshit excuse about drugs and prostitution is true, I'm pretty sure the washrooms can be program to close during certain times.

/end of rant.

Man Ramsay, I love your posts. Had an image of a mouth breathing, wife-beater wearing, chain smoking dude in his mom's basement calling Dial-A-Bottle and commenting on Herald articles on their computer.

In a somewhat related fashion, my old cell number was blacklisted from Dial-A-Bottle. Also from several cab companies. Long story.
