Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe the facade is painted red. It is a type of stone. Minneapolis has a lot of heritage masonry buildings with this reddish brick..........I think!
If it is red stone, that's fine too. Just looks like the grout and block are the same colour, which would lead me to believe it was painted. I'd rather have a dirty, natural looking colour than something painted over. Similar to all the dirty, light coloured buildings around downtown.

Presumably just a red sandstone, which is common in many places (e.g. Toronto) but would have had to be imported into Winnipeg.
The building has already been almost completely destroyed by two fires, in 1904 and 1914, so maybe its resilience will win out again.

Yes, you'd certainly think so. I wonder if there was some inherent weakness, or other surprises, as the result of a slapdash reconstruction job after the fire 100 years ago. Only the front facade and parts of the other exterior walls were left after that one. They rebuilt it with one less floor than it originally had:
Unfortunate news in regards to the Scott Block. As mentioned the facade should be preserved regardless. A substantial amount of capital has gone into this restoration. Demolishing this structure should only be a last resort. Someone mentioned structural flaws, I'd like to know how severe these are and the cost involved to remedy the situation before a decision to demolish it is approved, as a poster mentioned earlier.
Retiring University of Winnipeg president Lloyd Axworthy will open the $40-million RecPlex indoor soccer complex this morning.
Axworthy and Premier Greg Selinger will preside over the official opening of the new facility on the west side of Spence Street directly south of the Duckworth Centre in the heart of the main campus.
The event is expected to be the last major campus expansion event for Axworthy, who retires at the end of the month.
The U of W has yet to announce his successor.
I tried posting the photos from the freeP, but didn't work.
The actual field at the U of W, while still regulation soccer, is a fair bit smaller than the one at the U of M. It's a little unfortunate, it means that (the sport that effects me) ultimate frisbee can't fit four (or even three) fields in like they can at the U of M. It's probably still workable but I think 2 fields is the max that would fit. I assume this is the case for other non-soccer sports like indoor football.
U of M: 100m x 64m
U of W: 90m x 50m
(The width dimension is the important one for dividing the field into quarters or thirds as it becomes the length of the smaller field. 50m is definitely too small for ultimate, probably other sports too)

by moving around in google earth, ive seen how much this tower makes the skyline "pop" from all of the angles, one distinct peak instead of 3 towers like the same height

I have for some time wished for some height outside of P&M. I don't want to be a downer but I cant express how tired I am of seeing seemingly every shot of downtown Winnipeg feature the four buildings at P&M. To me it really makes the city skyline look small and dated. Downtown really needs some density around P&M like in the surface lots around the ballpark and something next to the Trizec Building. P&M just doesn't have any density. I much prefer the view traveling north over the Midtown Bridge.
