It is important to understand the meaning of the words we use. For example if you use the word LANDMARK it is not the same as something that has become a symbol or can represent something much larger than itself. The Liberty Bell is an ICON that can represents Philadelphia in general or aspects of political and/or religious freedom associated with events in Philadelphia. The Eiffel Tower is both a LANDMARK and an icon of Paris. Almost always a LANDMARK is something that marks the landscape so City Hall is without doubt a LANDMARK. Liberty I is not a LANDMARK when walking around CC Philadelphia. At street level it is just another building along West Market street although its entrance on Market street is very impressive. Liberty I can be used, and rightly so as an ICON of Philadelphia in general but even more so as a symbol of its resurgence. I think the person who began this discussion was not really talking about a LANDMARK so much as an ICON. Before anyone responds to this they should look up the definition of LANDMARK vs ICON.

Well ... I don't know many people who couldn't identify the Empire State Building ... after all, King Kong used to swat at airplanes on that building and sleepless guys in Seattle fly across the country and meet their true love on the top of that building

You are right though ... heck, my wife is from NYC and I'll bet she can name more casinos in Vegas than skyscrapers in NYC.

Anyway, holding my breath for the "June" groundbreaking.

Had to correct the error above. Philadelphia City Hall was the world's tallest building from 1901–1908, when it was supplanted by the Singer Building in Manhattan.
I am no architectural scholar, but I would also add that in my opinion PSFS is as well known as and even more architecturally significant than the Gherkin.

Just to update: There is no progress on the lot. As I parked nearby today the extent of activity on premise was a janitor sweeping trash up. Hopefully making it look nice for some kind of ground breack ceremony in the near future.

I think there's just about no chance that this won't happen at this point. The only thing that could possibly prevent this is some sort of catastrophe at Comcast (A comcastrophy?). The funding is in place, the approvals are there, everything is lined up. It's only a matter of when it will start. And we're not even halfway through June yet, so I'm still optimistic for a June groundbreaking.

Actually since this building has a public restaurant at the top floor it should be an icon. Most people will just call it the Comcast Tower. Especially people from outside Philadelphia.........

I imagine it'll get confusing having two Comcast towers.

They should rename one Xfinity Center. Just some thoughts

Or One Comcast Center and Two Comcast Center, like One Liberty Place and Two Liberty Place.

Or how about name one "Ralph" and the other one "Brian" (in honor of Roberts, pater and fils).

At least these two "Comcast" towers won't get confused as "twins".

New York City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission has scheduled a hearing on Comcast’s plan to install the company’s logo at 30 Rockefeller Plaza.

As proposed, more modest 12-foot-high light-emitting diode signs that spell Comcast in white uppercase letters would be installed on the broader north and south limestone exteriors, crowned by 10-foot-high NBC peacock logos. A 17-foot-high peacock would appear by itself on the western facade more or less facing Philadelphia. Measured in overall square feet, the new signs would be slightly more compact than the existing G.E. signs.

Oh nooooo!

Philadelphia can have Comcast!
New York City certainly does not need them insulting the top of the rock with their corporate name!
I'd rather see TRUMP instead!

Yeah, but RCA was there longer than GE, and GE had no problem pulling the RCA sign down.

I say go for it Comcast. Why not? If there is any historical desecration happening here, it happened when GE took down RCA.
