Hey guys, I was just thinking to myself and I realized that for west downtown to undergo the transformation that was expected, salt lake central needs to be like union station in denver. Otherwise it's just a glorified frontrunner stop and the intermodal building does nothing for the area, nor does it do anything for the station. Hopefully we could encourage local businesses to move in around the are and make it a place to be, not a place to transfer.

I agree with FM. UtPlanner, what's going on with the Zoning requirements for these new housing projects? Do they really not require retail on the lower level? Is it that all these new urban housing projects coming on line on 4th south are so new that SLC zoning hasn't quite adapted to them thoroughly? All residential will kill one of the biggest reasons why multi-family urban housing on 4th south will work. SLC can't afford to have major parts of blocks with little to no pedestrian retail/commercial activity on 4th south. These new projects are replacing restaurants and retail with just residential.

Agreed, 4th south is going to die and become a bad place to do things on and 5th souths badness is going to start to show.

While I think we can agree that Union Station in Denver is awesome, it probably isnt gonna happen in SLC. UTA does a great job with the legal work involved in aquiring rail right of ways from freight companies. They do a great job building projects fast and under budget. They are smart in ways like taking an old ZCMI warehouse and converting it into a new TRAX maintenance facility. UTA does not get into doing any more engineering than it has too. Let's keep in mind that the large bulk of the North Temple viaduct was actually designed and funded by Salt Lake City.

TBH we kinda screwed the pooch with Gateway not just making Union Pacific Station our Union Station for lightrail and FrontRunner and building something better than the Gateway around it.

To be fair though, we just dont have the same kind of craziness with all these lines coming together from all these different directions like Denver. So as much as it breaks my heart to say it, I think it doesn't line up with UTA's abilities, I think it also doesnt really serve the same kind of need it does for a city like Denver. Really not sure if it would do any good putting a diesel train underground.

We could have four lines going through if it was at union (FR north and south, green and blue lines) and the future streetcar but union st does have more lines through it than slc

This is what has been going on at the old Chase/Ruth's Chris building. It doesn't look at all like the renderings that we saw. There are neon purple lights on the underside of the bridge. I'm guessing that the entrance to the steak house will be right there with maybe some valet parking. I can't tell but it almost looks like the big black pillar on the right side of this picture is going to be an LED screen of some sort.

I like the Chase/Ruth Chris makeover bridge. Would like to see them do something contemporary and interesting with that bland corner office.

Speaking of the Ruth's Chris bridge area, does anyone know what the situation is with the old Zephyr? I know several years ago that David Bernolfo was hoping that it would be the new site for the PAC, but what about now? Is Bernolfo still holding out for someone to purchase the land or is there another reason why he hasn't leased out the space for all this time?

Wish the Ruth's Chris building would be replace with a taller building with Ruth Chris at the bottom. Kind of a waste to have a 3-story building on that corner.

Yes it would be nice, I would like to see the lot across the street redone first. Demolished and rebuilt with something 10 or higher and continue that down the street till Market Street! That area is lacking in Apartments or living space in general.

The dumb and dumber 2 trailer is now out... Looks like they did not film in salt lake like the first film... They found a very similar apartment building.. But it is not the one on 300 east from the first movie... There were other locations used in the first movie as well... The airport and the deveearux mansion are two that come to mind.

Finding developer is next step in mega-hotel process

oh wow.. It could easily be 2020 before this thing is completed at that rate... a year to find a developer, a year to find a location, a year for demalition, 2-3 years for construction... hmm
