In my wildest dreams, they tear down the annex (also responsible for the pedestrian tunnel, and I believe the mezzanine level the article suggested Macy's wouldn't use), and build a new residential tower in its place. As is, it is just a big windowless box, and it could well be cheaper to just replace it rather than try to renovate it. Maybe add a cool skybridge up above the fourth floor.
The other reason this seems plausible to me is I am not sure how they get enough light into the upper floors of east side of the old buildings with the annex glued to the back. This is the best image I could quickly find:

Edit: It also occurs to me that if the annex were demo'ed, it might be a lot easier to add some underground parking before building something new in its place.
