It's about time. The last time I noticed that big void on Market I got a bit worried and asked my friend "If they can't build in this economic climate, then when?"
It will be good to see that part of the streetwall filled in again.
When this project was announced I had doubts that it would work as I did not think that there was a need for more retail in the area. The developer has not gotten the targeted upscale stores it wanted and is now trying to get less upscale tenants. Time will tell. Could this be another Sony Metreon in the making?

Jerry, I think you've got that backwards. They developer is now pursuing more upscale stores than they initially intended to.
^^^Reverse actually. Cypress was never able to get the discount retailers.
Target went to Metreon
ROSS is happy in its initial term at 799 Market through 2019
Marshalls just went into 760 Market across from ROSS (Phelan Building)
Nordstrom Rack went into 901 Market next door and immediately across from the Nordstrom at Westfield (and 901 Market still has a large jr anchor type vacancy I believe)
Neiman Marcus Last Call just signed a lease further east on Market
There is a 20,000 SF vacancy at the corner of Market and Fourth, and it's mostly below street level, so because Marshalls went into similar space, it's possible that the vacancy there is competition for this project as well.
Momentum for retail did return to the Union Sq / Grant St direction with the Apple announcement and new retailers that have opened up shop (Dior is going to be opening a huge new 10,000 SF flagship where DeBeers is now...and there is a development opportunity on the market on Sutter and Grant).
I find it interesting that Cypress bought out Carlyle. It doesn't actually comfort me that this is getting done.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed, though. I want this done, that BIG design built (Thatcher family trust project), Related's 5 M project, and all of the smaller stuff in between to happen.
The excellent J.K. Dineen write-up in the Chronicle about Market Street Place explains the project's history, status and construction timeline, but also talks about Mid-Market overall--he notes that just in the last three years, Mid-Market has added 13,000 new jobs and some 5,500 new housing units have been completed or are u/c or planned--and gives a rundown of some notable nearby projects:

The long-stalled Market Street Place retail project has seen a revival as other projects come together in the area.
1. 950-974 Market St.: A planned mixed-use project with 300 units, 250-room hotel and arts center.
2. Warfield, 988 Market St.: Restoration of the building has brought new tenants, including Spotify and Benchmark Capital.
3. 1028 Market St.: 186 housing units proposed.
4. 1066 Market St.: 301 housing units proposed.
5. Renoir Hotel, 45 McAllister St.: A $40 million renovation of the hotel, under construction.
6. Strand Theater, 1127 Market St.: $30 million conversion into a second venue for the American Conservatory Theater.
7. 1055 Market St.: 100-room hotel proposed.
8. Wilson Building, 973 Market St.: The historic building has just completed a transition into 65 apartment units.
The city is not doing anything to address the SRO transient problem in the area. They are just sweeping the dirt under the rug (Market st. Being the rug).
Will these new developments lead to takeover and evictions of the slum hotels that make up the mid market and tenderloin areas? That is my biggest concern about what is going to get in the way of a true revival. It's still not a desirable area. With each new planned development we hear "oh this is really going to change the area!" Since the early 2000s. It's still a turd, though, a prettier painted turd.
But nobody will let developers evict the SRO tenants and really clean up the place, because this is Oh-So-Compassinate San Francisco. Until something is done about those issues, I can never get truly excited about the area's "revival." Just the other day I read on he Chronicle that an inebriated crazy man stabbed a construction worker in broad daylight in Mid Market. That stuff has got to stop.
I have a LARGE construction update coming tonight. Stay tuned.
Simms, does it have to do with the 50 First Street site? I walked by there today and saw some equipment in place on the empty lot on Mission St. This area is already bustling with construction sites and it appears there is about to be another.
^^^Oh, haha, had no idea...looks like they may be breaking up some concrete for some soil testing. By large I meant literally that - comprehensive and lots of photos. I wish it were "large" in that something groundbreaking was going on!
...Nothing really happening at 1415 Mission St, and honestly, I'm not even excited for it since Architectonica botch the f**k out of an OK Heller Manus design.
1321 Mission St (Panoramic micro units by Patrick Kennedy). Hard to imagine there will be 160 units in this tiny 11 story building. Studios at 270-305 SF and 2 BRs at 625-650 SF.
680 Folsom + 55 Howard, also basically complete, but tenant signage is now up for the two tower tenants (Athena Health occupying 55 Howard), and the retail/commercial component on the corner is UC:
SFMOMA progressing:
181 Fremont with cranes for 299 Fremont and 399 Fremont behind:
South Beach/South of Market
This is 333 Brannan, I believe. I couldn't tell where exactly 345 Brannan would go (I guess they are demolishing an existing structure?), and 270 Brannan not quite UC either:
What is this going up right across from the Ballpark?

That is 72 Townsend, a new condo deal that will be built up from inside the shell of the existing warehouse facade. Similar concept to the Arc Light Lofts a block or so away, although the design is not as modern as Arc Light.
sims3 redux - you must be superman! Lots of great updates around the city.
This view of 101 Polk Street is from Ivy Street. What is interesting about this picture is that the machine on top of the sand heap has a metal basket with a grate & is sifting the rubble (bricks, pieces of concrete) from whatever was on the site over 45 years ago. This sifting process has been going on since the work started on the site. [url=https://flic.kr/p/nP9Fns]101 Polk Street 2014_06_03[

yeah, no surprise that prop b looks to pass by a landslide.
So you get no Warriors Arena on the piers and you also get to have the voters reject every new waterfront project in the future. Way to go! I knew this would happen. Which is one of the reasons I opposed the arena site from the start. After 8 Washington they should have just left it alone.
