I'm quite certain you're correct about the jingle, "The heart of the ci-teeeeee." Always liked that ultra-modern bilinier font, similar to what the Jays picked up subsequently in '77. And the black facade capped with contrasting off white looked fabulous too, at least while it was still clean. The only significant knock against it was its desolate streetscape; panned even back then, though at the time I didn't understand why. Just go inside where the action and climate-controlled environment is, duh.

Can you imagine how wild that could look during a snowfall? This is such a great way to bring some whimsy to the city.

I hope the lighting is vandal proof. There are some f-upped people out there walking back and forth on the bridge. Hopefully they will smile and keep walking being as amazed as we are.

Drove across the High Level the other night as the lights were on, and it's an interesting look on the roadway too. While it's not lit towards that inside, you can still see the lights. Really neat.

^i hope they leave those lights on every night all year round. the bridge is a unique feature in this city and should be highlighted every night so people can see it, will notice it, and will hopefully appreciate it's uniqueness. much nicer than the waterfall was, in my humble opinion.

I attended the 25th anniversary celebrations of Genesee over the weekend. Capital Power put on a first class event featuring bus tours of the mine, guided tours of one of the plants, kids midway, car show, horse rides, etc.

A few pictures you guys may find interesting.

The plant makes the bus seem pretty small

Bus driver was a little cautious driving down the haul road next to these bad boys.

One of the areas being reclaimed. Parts are reclaimed into fields, this portion is being reclaimed into a wetland. 12,000 trees were just planted on the hill side.

bucket is basically the size of a two car garage. 3,600m3 an hour. removing overburden and filling up the previously mined area.

Reclaimed field. They also have to rebuild all of the range and township roads.

view from the top looking at the new powerlines being built. Not sure how high it is, looks a bit higher than my balcony (21 floors)

Look at the smoke stack. Certainly a hell of a lot more cleaner than most people would think. I believe this is the stack for the latest plant that was just completed a few years ago.

Having rec property near a power plant isn't so bad. The Sundance plant at Wabamun has their drag line essentially across the range road (South) from where our family cabin is at South Seba and I can say definitively that we don't even notice that there's a monumentally large fully operational mine there.
Essentially no noise pollution, the odd time you can see the structure of the massive excavator.
If you weren't familiar with the geography and history around the lake, you'd have no idea there was a mine there.

If anyone is interested in seeing just how big the mine is, take a drive down Yellowhead and turn south onto Hwy 31 towards Tomahawk (about a 45 min drive from city limits) and prepare to be mind blown. Or google map it.
