Interesting tidbit from the article:

TransLink vice-president Bob Paddon said part of the work would be to determine whether to move to five-car trains — the current Expo SkyTrains are four-car — since the upgrades also extend station platforms to fit longer vehicles.

He said a decision on longer trains wouldn’t be made until after new transit funding is decided.

The initial order of 34 cars and the first option of 14 cars were all arrived by end of 2009. The second order of 24 cars was not proceeded due to funding issues.

The order of 28 cars for Evergreen Line also got an option for 28 more, but that must be decided fairly soon I think...

The MKI trains almost seem like toys, or midway rides, when compared to other systems in cities of the same size and scale as Vancouver.
The MKII trains are better, and the Canada line trains are great - if a little short.

I noticed the Canada Line trains tend to smell more than the mark 2s because the Canada Line air circulation system turns on and off all the time. On the mark 2s, the fans are always on.

It's not the size or length that matters, it's also that they are cleaner, smells better, and more frequently plunging swiftly and deeper into the tunnels, satisfying many individuals daily.

Earlier this week I happened to be heading to Waterfront for the first time in months, and got caught in the conga line of trains trying to get into the station.

Not a complaint, because while stopped (several times) under Cordova, I was able to check out the 'grotto' under the Fairmont Hotel, Waterfront Centre, &tc all the way to the platform.

It's surprising what things you notice when stopped on the tracks, that would otherwise be a blur.

Translink just put our a qualification call for retail leasing and marketing for the skytrain network, I've cut and pasted a few interesting tidbits.

2.2 TransLink’s retail program aims to provide customers with convenient goods and services through approved retail vendors located at SkyTrain Expo and Millennium Line Stations and transit exchanges. TransLink currently has 10 Commercial Retail Units and 1 Kiosk in operation, with plans for additional 4 new Retail Units.
2.3 Evergreen Line and Canada Line retail locations may be added to the contractors scope at a later date

I would give anything for Bridgeport Station to have a little convenience store similar to Scott Road's. I've spent too many hungry nights waiting for the bus there!

It says to be determined for Metrotown. I wonder how much retail will be built underneath the station. It would be cool to see retail built underneath the tracks all the way out to Willingdon. This would compliment the retail row being developed along the south side of Beresford. I think that there's enough population there to support it, besides that, I think people would enjoy a more urban experience vs a massive shopping mall. It would also neutralize the blighting effect of the elevated guideway.
