New $25-30M Hangar for the NL Provincial Water Bomber Fleet Planned for Gander International Airport
http://www.ganderbeacon.ca/News/Local/2014-04-15/article-3690115/Building-birdhouses/1

Nick McGrath, Minister of Transportation and Works, and Gander MHA and Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Kevin O’Brien announced the provincial government will complete the construction of a new state-of-the-art hangar for its provincial Air Services water bomber fleet at Gander International Airport in 2016.

“It’s hard to say an exact dollar figure until we get further along in the process, but I would think it would be in the $25-$30 million range,” said McGrath. “This strategic investment will support a modern fleet of water bombers in Gander, and provide economic benefits for local business in the short-term and support continued employment well into the future.”

Here's a link to the PDF file describing the St. John's Airport terminal expansion. Essentially the expansion of the building itself will be done in two phases. The current size of the terminal looks so small compared to the final project.

http://www.stjohnsairport.com/media_uploads/pdf/331.pdf

I think the big thing here is the addition of more restaurants in the departures lounge. As it stands now, that lounge is small, uncomfortable, and only has a Tim Hortons express, and a Jumping Bean coffee kiosk. If you're stuck back there for any length of time due to a delayed/cancelled flight you're pretty much in a prison. This'll help greatly.

Here is the link to the pdf for the 2013 annual report of the Greater Moncton International Airport.

http://www.cyqm.ca/site/media/gmia/GIMA_AR2013_ENG_WEB.pdf

Highlights:

- completion of the extension of Runway 06/24 to 10,000 feet in October at a cost of $24M.
- expansion of Apron 5 to accommodate larger FedEx aircraft
- the addition of two sun destination flights for the 2014 season, bringing the total number to 11
- the opening of an economy parking lot on the south side of the airport
- the annual number of customers who used the GMIA’s air services rose approximately 5.3% to 647,682 – a new record!
- on the air cargo front, we experienced a 8.5% increase in cargo tonnage handled at this facility, bringing our annual total to 24,171 tonnes. This is principally due to three reasons. First, the modest improvement in the world economy and, hence, the use of air to ship product, the addition of UPS to the GMIA family and, finally, Bluebird Cargo

FOR THE PERIOD 2014-2018, THE FOCUS OF THE BOARD AND MANAGEMENT OF THE GMIA WILL BE:
• a continuance of growth in both the air passenger and air cargo sectors to over 700,000 and 40,000 tonnes respectively;
• to establish an air cargo precinct, inclusive of cargo-related infrastructure, as part of developing the region into the Air Cargo Logistics Centre of Excellence for Atlantic Canada;
• replacement of aging operational infrastructure; underway is the planning for the construction of a new combined service building;
• a continuance of identifying green initiatives where economically practical and feasible;
• a continuance of working with all stakeholders regarding the above issues; and
• working with the Canadian Airports Council (CAC) and others, to encourage the federal government

C.A.L. (ICL 942) is scheduled to depart JFK at 1310, arriving here around 1530. Looks like they are down to one Boeing 747-200 in service. I don't know if the other plane is ouy of service. I do see a second CAL flight that has beem going between Liege and Tel Aviv almost daily but its using a TNT cargo Boeing 777-200. I heard someone say that the flight to Moncton was gonna be every other week. Well I think that could be incorrect . Just remember if following this flight on flightaware... both times it showed a departure time of 2030, the flight last week departed at 1800, 1810 the flight prior.

enjoy the day everyone

I posted this in the city videos thread on the main Canada forum, but it fits with where I'm going here too. Beauty flyover from the take-off of Kalitta Air's 747 cargo jet. I posted a photo/news story from the local paper last spring of this same plane.

Video Link

And a couple photos I caught from the other side of town. I ran out in the driveway when I heard a huge plane taking off, had a great shot framed in the viewfinder but didn't the camera freeze... I followed it with the camera and got a couple photos as it was flying away but I'm still disappointed with the one I missed, basically a 747 sitting just above the roof tops of the next neighbourhood over... oh well.

I could not agree more. It makes fiscal sense over the long term and would significantly help access in/out of the province which would be positive for the economy.

Concur with all, would be great to fly from here to Europe and not have to go to TO just to fly back over your hometown heading that way

Everyone outside the YQM area wants a centralized airport...everyone else on the other hand...

You'll have to pry it from our cold dead hands

This is an odd statement to me. YQM really doesn't offer anything significant beyond what YFC or YSJ offer.

If all three were combined we could see frequent service to YYZ, larger planes which means lower fares and even potentially more direct flights.

If your happy with very poor air service just cause you have more passengers than YSJ or YFC I don't think you fly too often and are not seeing the greater economic benefits for the province and the individual cities.

The thing with the "centralized" airport is the emptiness between Sussex and everything else. Maybe for Moncton and Saint John it wouldn't be as bad; but with Gagetown, it's a long drive (125 km, give or take) through nothing to reach Freddy. Do any other places have distances (70km+) between the airport and the main population centres they serve?

In retrospect, maybe YFC and YSJ should not have been built and an Airport Shuttle service set up to serve YQM would have been better; but I'm not sure if it would be that much better.

In one sentence you suggest Sussex being too far for Fredericton users, followed by a sentence suggesting Freddy and SJ users could drive even further to Moncton. Make up your mind! Downtown Halifax to YHZ is about 35KM, which certainly feels like 70KM.

I do enjoy the idea of a centralized NB airport but I just can't imagine all three smaller airports closing and relocating. The infighting amongst the different municipalities and regions of this province is bad enough as is, I can't even imagine how bad an airport move would be. In an ideal world we would have train service from the new airport hub to the three cities with a nice station at the airport. Sussex would make for a nice transportation hub for sure.

However, pipedreams.

Not 70+ but comparable: Corner Brook is approximately 65km from YJT and 60km from YDF. When driving to either you have to pick your evil to deal with: the road to YDF is partially divided, but the road to YJT has moose fencing...

I think if you compared the commute which would be roughly 60 minutes to that of 90% of users of Major North American airports they would much prefer the drive. No traffic, hassle free parking, shorter lines, etc

Logistically its a no brainer, as others have mentioned its a political issue.

It's one thing to have a Major airport serving primarily 1 community, and having shuttles to service secondary communities (YQM serving Moncton mainly, and having shuttle service to service Freddy, SJ and possibly Charlottetown), and another that is in a "central" location but all of the main population centres have to shuttle in/have ~hour long trips to get there.

In my own experience, I compare it to taking the Airport Shuttle from Waterloo to Pearson, as opposed to making people from Toronto, Ottawa and Kingston go to some location in the middle of the three cities (and in the middle of nowhere as someone pointed out in other threads). If those distances are too big, ignore the border and put an airport to serve Ottawa, Kingston and Montreal about midway between the three cities instead.

I don't think 70+ km would be in 'easy' taxi range, since you would have to pay the cab for a 140km+ round trip. For Freddy, it would be even worst since a "Cab to the airport" would be a 2h+ trip for the cabbie. The distance would go from ~15km to 120km, 8 times the distance.

It's probably just me, but I'd rather an urban highway trip that may take an hour with traffic sometimes, but usually takes shorter, vs a rural highway trip that will ALWAYS take an hour and has effectively nothing in between.

If the province decided to close the three airports and open YSX, I'd support them; but honestly, the more I think of it, between how empty the space between the tricities are, and how far apart they are, I'm not sure it would be a good idea, neither in the past or now. (At least in the past, theoretically Sussex would be bigger and highway routing would go closer to it). Freddy especially is about 50km too far west to really work with a Sussex airport. Move Fredericton to the south Grand Lake area, and things might really work for Sussex to be the province's main city.

Looks like NB is losing its' only direct link to a major US hub. Hopefully it won't be long until another carrier offers a direct flight.

I suppose the main difference is that the places you listed (Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal) are all large enough to support their own International airports. Fredericton and Saint John, despite their efforts, are not. There's no point attempting to centralize between Toronto/Ottawa or Ottawa/Montreal when each are capable of supporting their own international airports.

I'd love to see cost comparisons between having three small/medium sized regional airports v. one larger, international airport.
