Guardian II now under construction. It will be tied with Guardian I as the tallest residential building in the province at 146 meters and 43 storeys.

I wish I could post some construction sites from here, but compared to what's on this thread, a bunch of 4 story wood frame buildings would look rather out of place

It's what's on the inside that counts!

It will be completely surrounded by towers soon anyway so no sense in spending a lot of money on exterior design.

It was built just before the trend of ''signature'' architecture for arenas and stadiums began.

The one thing I like about it is the Windsor Court facade with its inclined glass wall. It will be even better once the Deloitte tower is completed with the water/ice rink installation.

The rest of the Bell center is mediocre, but it will be buried by towers on all side, like Leftcoaster said.

Good points.

But I don't think they had the fact it would be hidden by towers one day in mind when they gave the arena such an underwhelming design.

I guess not. Cost must have been a big factor, obviously. This arena was privately financed. It may not be pretty, but it is hugely successful, so they must have done a few things right :-) And it's location is just perfect.

The worst thing about the Bell Centre is the location. They plunked it right next to Windsor Station, Montreal's grandest train station. This move essentially neutered Windsor Station by preventing it from performing the function it was intended for. Of course in the 1990s, who cared about trains? The prevailing view was that passenger rail was dying and not worthy of being supported.

The project of linking downtown to the airport by train never achieved unanimous support since the more direct CP tracks (which used to go to Windsor Station) now end up at Lucien L'Allier, which the airport authority rightly views as a pathetic excuse for a downtown station (they don't even really consider it to be downtown).

They could have built the Bell Centre a block to the south (and it would have likely extended downtown southward about 20 years earlier than will be the case now...)
