Retail in the Johnson building would be awesome, is that something that might happen sooner or at the usual pace of sometime in the next few decades

The development potential of the former Birks site has also changed dramatically since the 90's and early 2000's. Same thing goes for the Johnson Building storefronts. The idea of a major retailers and condo buildings on Barrington seemed far-fetched in 1995 but the reality in 2014 is very different. There are probably multiple developers today who would jump at the chance to build something great on this property while preserving the Dennis Building.

It's great to hear that there's been some dialogue on this. People should get in touch with councillors and MLAs and try to explain why the Dennis Building and this corner are so important.

Does this mean they could ignore the viewplanes, too?

No, because that would cause hell spawn to rain down from the heavens.

The dead rising from the graves. Cats and dogs, living together, mass hysteria.

I can't recall if this was posted before about a mixed use project for the Quinpool Education Centre, I always thought this was the building they were talking about for St Pats site for the longest time. This could be a really great project for Quinpool. http://thechronicleherald.ca/opinion/1200715-defining-moment-for-quinpool

This is excellent. Fantastic that this association has an ambitious vision for the property, one that aligns with the need for densification on the peninsula, and rejects past conservative approaches to development on Quinpool.

I've seen some plans indicating that this beauty https://www.google.ca/maps/@44.662056,-6...3m4!1e1!3m2!1siReE_uYNOqU8JpQTngqogg!2e0 may be replaced in the not too distant future. The plans I have seen show ground & partial 2nd floor commercial with apartments above. Looks like the intent is to mimic the style of the hydrostone market (much like what was done on the corner of Young & Agricola). The plans looks preliminary, so no indication as to materials yet.

Interesting I would think the natural progression would be to develop the parking lot where dulux paints is on the coner of Young and Isleville (since this area is now reportedly the new peggy's cove) that far down Isleville really isn't that viable from the hydrostone it seem weird to put 2 floor of retrial space in that area

The renderings I've seen make it look exactly like the Hydrostone. The hope is to start demolition in this year.

Dulux Paints is slated for redevelopment in the 7-9 floor range. I haven't seen any renderings but I think it was by a reputable developer.

The design is very similar to the Mother's Pizza building.

I wonder how long it'll be before construction begins on St. Joseph Square? That one has been around for a long time.

I wonder what's behind all this Hydrostone mimicry? I love Mothers' interior, but the exterior design feels like an odd choice.

My feeling is that if you're going to emulate an old building, do it so well that a casual observer actually can't tell the difference--in this case, use real stone and similar craftsman-quality architectural detailing. Obviously, that's rarely done these days due to cost--so let's just take what we like about the Hydrostone (small scale, urban frontage, etc) and apply it to a modern building.

This is really weird a Real estate company with no experience in the film industry that wants to use it for tourism. Wants to build a Film Production Company, Cruise ships, Information technology development centres, Maga huge resort with miniature world famous towns and monuments from Czech. Italy, Nertherlands ,Paris. That weird Crystal City!?!? whatever the hell that is.

The video starts of with a zoom in of Halifax "This is the environment the DDI observe of the current times in Nova Scotia." It looks nothing like Halifax. I'm sceptical how much tourism movies could bring to Nova Scotia sure The Lord Of Rings brought a bit more to New Zeeland but its one of the biggest mythologies and trilogies in History with 100's of billions in a budget for each film and its mostly stunning landscapes of New Zeeland. This is a real estate company with no experience in the film industry I'm not sure how they can just snap their fingers and expect Chinese blockbusters to be filmed here, even if one of chinas shittastic highest grossing movies ever The Monkey King http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCj-XP5cjOY was filmed here I don't think it would draw people to come here

The DDI gourps tourism video shown here http://en.ddigroup.com.cn/ is really weird and shows the Rockey Mountains around Indian Harbour Lake, I'm sceptical if half of those shorts were taken in Nova Scotia

More than anything I'm weirded out by this mega huge Crystal City proposal they alluded to at the end of the CBC video that seems to be a new city the size of New York. Like thats going to happen. Its Typical Chinese developer thinking though build whole new cities in their country that are going to sit mostly abandoned for decades and now they want to do it in other parts of the world.

They seem a bit delusional in what they hope to achieve and misleading and fictional in what their intentions are. China has had a huge influx of development of replica towns and resorts of in their country of europe it a huge thing developers keep doing and its been a colossal failure, they are all pretty much ghost towns. I'm not sure whos going to Fly to Nova Scotia to see replicas Czech. Italy, Nertherlands , Paris, ect... when they could go to those places.

How long does the permit process generally take for a development like this? I read that they are planning to start construction this summer. Surely it must take longer than that for it to get approved? Are public hearings expected? Thanks. Long time lurker first time poster.

Calm down, man. I think this is fantastic. This is just the sort of investment and interest that Nova Scotia needs.

We're NEVER going to increase immigration to sustain our population if no one knows about us, and what we have to offer. This sort of investment can bring tourists and later migration interest.

Naturally, a real estate firm from China is going to do things differently, and have some different ideas. Let's keep an open mind.
