Atlanta History Center plans 21st-century transformation

Capital improvements planned for the Atlanta History Museum will affect over 37,000 square feet of the building, including the creation of a new West Paces Ferry Road entrance façade and enlarged 5,300-square-foot atrium, an updating of the museum’s public spaces and the addition of new connections within the building.“We want to have a face on West Paces Ferry that reads that we’re running a museum,” said Sheffield Hale, president and CEO of the History Center. “It’s not apparent what’s here now. We want it to (convey), ‘Open all the time — public space.’”

The transformation will be paid for with $21.1 million raised in a just-completed capital campaign, easily the largest in the august institution’s 88-year history.Other aspects will include the shifting of the front entrance so that it leads straight into the corridor housing most of the museum’s permanent exhibits. Their sheet-rocked entry walls will be opened up with floor-to-ceiling glass. bookstore-bistro, also glass-fronted, will be added beside the main entrance, accessible without admission. And the lobby/atrium will be expanded to 5,300 square feet to better accommodate center and private functions.

Gee, that's nice! The History Center is one of the city's great treasures.

Post proposes 400 apartments by Centennial Olympic Park

http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/real_...00-apartments-by-centennial-olympic.html
Quote:
After a series of new projects in Buckhead and Midtown, Atlanta’s intown apartment boom is finally expanding into downtown.

More than 800 residential units have been planned there in recent months — the most apartment activity downtown has seen in nearly a decade.

The latest proposal is from Post Properties Inc., which presented its plans for Centennial Park Apartments this week to downtown's Development Review Committee. The 407-unit project would sit on land Post already owns, a site bounded by Centennial Olympic Park Drive and Baker, Williams and Simpson streets.
The developer wants the downtown project to echo some of its Midtown projects, such as Post Parkside. It may also resemble another Midtown apartment building called Baltimore Row.

I think One Museum Place is imminent. There are signs for it now:

They also have a Web site with some detailed images. I'll post a couple here. Check out the site for details on the common areas and facade materials (it looks promising).

Web site: http://www.ompatlanta.com

Judging by the street lamps in the elevation it looks like this will be about the same height as MODA and the office building to the south, so it should fit in nicely.

It probably just means that they've started marketing the condos in earnest. We'll see.

BTW nice Midtown aerial on that website.

^VERY nice aerial.

I was totally bummed out along with everyone else when the original design evaporated. But, I'll take this. It's timeless and urbane, and it's really growing on me.

Still disappointing that it is not a high rise, but the elevation looks promising and the quality level befitting the site.

I'm fine with the height. I'm just disappointed that there is no active use on the block such as the art gallery that was a part of the previous proposal.

Memorial day construction pics

Elan Westside seems to be taking forever to finish

Walton Westside: Not bad except for the exposed parking.

College HOF I think this looks nice and I like the terra cotta. My only quibble is the blank wall under the parking deck. It seems like a bit of a waste in such a busy tourist corridor.

One12 Courtland

755 North: An all (or mostly) brick facade is possible

Amli Ponce Park

NCCHR

131 Ponce

Dueling student towers

Wow, awesome updates. I think Elan Westside looks sharp for the area, but that huge power pole at the corner just kills me.

I hear that.

I guess there's nothing to be done about the big metal poles but I wish we could at least get the wooden poles around town straightened up. Some of those things are so crooked they make my head hurt.

One of the first things that caught my eye in that aerial shot is the huge parking lot right in the middle where 33 Peachtree Place is going. Wasn't that supposed to break ground this month?

I noticed that too. It looks huge. Yes 33 Peachtree Place was rumored to start this month. I would expect it to start soon.

There have been tree removal signs there forever now but it doesn't look like any trees have been removed.

I don't know much about this stuff but does building construction generally start in the summer, or does the season not matter so much here because it never gets really too cold?

So I've only been here a couple of years and I hope someone can enlighten me. How did it come about that almost all of the high rise activity came about to the east of the freeway but there's comparatively little to the west of the freeway?

I didn't hear what is happening at the site south of the main site. Is there going to be 2 high rises as a part of this project? I somehow missed this.

West of the freeway is largely Georgia Tech's campus.

There are two separate projects next to each other, University House and Centergy North (or maybe Centergy Two, I've seen it called both).

This is a great place to go if you ever want to know what's happening in a particular area:

In addition to whats already been said. The first page of the project list thread is up to date with all major projects and construction in the city.

I suppose you mean north of North Avenue? If we're being precise, downtown and all its high rises are west of The Connector. Starting with North Avenue and to the west of The Connector, there is Georgia Tech which limits development and north of that is Turner's campus. Around Turner's Campus is single family neighborhoods, but you do get development west of The Connector at Atlantic Station.

You would also have to consider that side of the highway has always been "rougher" with projects just south of Georgia Tech being demolished for the Olympics and notorious neighborhoods like Vine City and English Avenue being relatively close by.

Another major consideration is there is still a lot of open space in Atlanta and, relatively, it's cheap to build on. There's no reason to develop tall buildings in (relatively) undesirable areas when you have concentrations, and desirable, areas like Midtown and Buckhead. The Westside or West Midtown or whatever you want to call it is relatively new.
