The tunnel looks really good after years of work. I didn't think it was possible for Miami to have a tunnel, but they pulled it off and it has a lot of modern technology to deal with many circumstances.

I think we could fit this into the compilation thread as it is near Miami. This looks like paradise btw. I wouldn't mind spending a vacation using this resort as the launchpad.

After Decades, New Hotel Construction Coming To The Keys

Quote:
For decades, strict growth regulations meant to preserve the natural and low=scale aspect of the Florida Keys has basically kept it natural and low scale by blocking new construction... and that meant no new hotels. And now, after all that time, the Playa Largo Resort will be Key Largo's first new resort to be built in twenty-one-fricken years, to be followed by two new hotels in Marathon and four in Key West. Playa Largo will cater to the posh crowd, which has been left rather hotel-less (along with its money) so to speak as existing hotels became ever more dated.

Thats quite an amazing update and project. Very nice. I made a thread for it in the proposal section given the scope of the project. It should be very interesting to see what will happen. Especially when it comes for review in July.

Publix plans 18-story residential tower

Quote:
Florida's grocery store empire Publix (which has those subs everyone loves) is dipping its feet in development again by proposing a new store and residential tower to replace a dumpy old store and huuuge parking lot in downtown Coral Gables.

Yep, Downtown Miami has a Whole Foods Tower, and now the Gables is getting a Publix Tower. Of course, Brickell already has one, underneath NINE at Mary Brickell Village, and isn't there residential above that one on Douglas?

The proposed grocery store will replace the current 43,000 square-foot store on LeJeune Road between Valencia Ave. and Andalusia Ave., and will come with an additional 18-story, 282-unit residential tower, as well as a 793-space parking garage (bicycle storage included).

According to Publix's lawyer Javier Fernandez, the proposed project represents "a significant enhancement…consistent with the current trajectory of downtown Coral Gables as an increasingly urban, mixed-use district." Perhaps most importantly, the project will introduce a total of 38,000 square-feet of landscaped open space (apparently 22,000 more than is required for mixed-use projects) including expanded sidewalks and pedestrian amenities.—

2-54 Northeast 40th Street
---------------

Thor gets $26.6M loan for Design District purchase

Quote:
Thor Equities received a $26.6 million loan for its most recent purchase in Miami’s Design District.
The New York investor obtained the financing from Dallas-based Bank of the Ozarks for its $45.4 million acquisition of Sam Herzberg’s portfolio in the district, according to Miami-Dade County records. The county recorded the transaction on Tuesday.

Thor has spent more than $76 million in four recent district investments, including last month’s $15.8 million purchase of the Baltus building. That building is contiguous to the properties Thor acquired from Herzberg.
The company already added the 2-54 Northeast 40th Street properties to its website. In its description of the portfolio, Thor says it plans to redevelop the existing buildings into “the most enviable luxury mixed-use property in the Design District.”

Boynton Beach Marriott project gets extension

Quote:
Boynton Beach commissioners approved a 12-month extension for the construction of a 108-room Marriott TownePlace Suites.
Architect John Vaughan of Delray Beach received a second extension for the project between Gateway and Quantum boulevards. He told city commissioners the latest extension would allow construction to begin by October. The four-story hotel would be finished by October 2015.
The economic downturn led Vaughan to ask for the initial extension in 2011, according to the Palm Beach Post. Commissioners originally approved the project in 2010.

Yes, I agree with you Chris. I like the designs and it's something unique to Brickell. I'm anxious to see more renderings.

I think it's great for that area too. Since it's so seedy over there now and this project will help clean that up.

For those who may be interested (along with myself), the Miami/South Florida imagery on Google Earth has been updated. It is now current as of January 2014.

3,000 student charter school coming to Miami

Quote:
The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners on Thursday approved a plan that calls for what could be the largest charter school in Florida.

With 3,000 students, the school, known as Pinecrest Academy, would seat more pupils than any other charter school in the state, according to attorney and State Sen. Miguel Diaz de la Portilla, who represented the property owner.

“It was slated to be a shopping center, another strip mall basically,’’ he said. “So we decided a charter school instead of a strip mall.”
The Academica run school has already received a charter from the Miami-Dade School Board, according to the Miami Herald. It could open at Southwest Eighth Street and Southwest 152nd Avenue as early as 2015.

^ I wonder why they are calling it the Pinecrest Academy since it is nowhere near Pinecrest itself. This is almost on the edge of the Everglades!

Yeah, they did. I saw it. I went onto Google Earth by other night ago. I saw the FLL south runway. It's coming along nicely. It will be completed sometime on September 18, 2014.

Some of the 3D imagery has been updated. Using Google Earth 3D. A couple of new towers that weren't there a couple of weeks ago. They definitely did update it though. Not all the areas though. On another note, I'm still waiting for the Update for NYC. Both on the 3D level and 2D. Bing Maps also I'm hoping updates the imagery (45 Degree) for Miami. Its woefully outdated.

Long-delayed nightclub to open in Wynwood

HOUSE will create as many as 100 new jobs, owner says

Quote:
A new nightclub slated to open this month in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District will create 50 to 100 new jobs, according to the owner.

The club, dubbed HOUSE, took six years and nearly $10 million dollars in real estate to complete, but is now slated to open on May 16, owner Mark Lowe, told the South Florida Business Journal. The club plans to employ contortionists, opera singers, drag artists, aerialists and other performance artists.

Lowe hopes to eventually bring 10 nightclubs, 10 restaurants and 10 hotels to the area, despite facing years of hurdles.
