International flights make Oregon much more competitive in the global economy.

Here in Vancouver BC, YVR is trying to do much the same thing. Although Vancouver is about the same size a Portland, our
Metro population is about the same as yours (2.4m ~). Portland seems due to overtake Vancouver in population according to certain reports. Vancouver is the only "major" Canadian city on the West Coast, and somehow, although planned much differently, seems to have many of the same goals as Portland, especially in trying for more route development overseas.

I always enjoyed PDX when travelling to Portland on business. I like to think it's an efficient airport. As the metropolitan area continues to grow at its healthy pace, more flights will come, be it domestic & international.

Nonstop International Flights Between Portland and Mexico to Resume!!!

Volaris Airlines of Mexico has just applied with the DOT to open a nonstop route linking Portland and Guadalajara, Mexico. No official date yet, but the application states they intend to start service shortly after government approval. Very exciting!

Alaska Airlines is also resuming PDX-DEN service in September according to Wikipedia. No source was given, however.

PDX-DEN is a huge gap in the Alaska network from PDX. Not surprised they are restarting the service. Its the largest airport-airport passenger market from PDX. Surprised they dropped this a couple years ago. But there is much competition on the route.

Still waiting for British to announce PDX-LHR with one of their 787s. And hoping for Korean Air to Asia.

I would imagine a direct flight to Paris on Delta would be a more realistic possibility.

Alaska Airlines Seeks Government Approval to Begin Service from Portland, Ore., to Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

SEATTLE — Alaska Airlines submitted its application today to begin two new nonstop flights from Portland, Ore., to Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The flights are pending approval by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Mexico Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil (DGAC).

The planned seasonal service will operate between Portland and Los Cabos from Nov. 3 through April 27, 2015, and between Portland and Puerto Vallarta from Nov. 4 through April 26, 2015.

"Alaska Airlines is committed to offering the most nonstop service from the Pacific Northwest to places our customers want to explore, and Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta are hot spots," said Joe Sprague, senior vice president of communications and external relations. "We're happy to expand our longtime flying to Mexico with new flights to these two popular leisure resorts for Rose City travelers, who can take advantage of our award-winning service and low fares for their adventures."

Alaska Airlines began flying to Mexico a quarter century ago and operates 240 flights a week during the winter between the West Coast and Mexico—more than any other carrier. Alaska flies an average of 1.5 million passengers a year to six Mexico beach destinations—Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo, Loreto, Los Cabos, Manzanillo, Mazatlán and Puerto Vallarta—in addition to Guadalajara and Mexico City. Alaska is seeking government approval to begin flights between Seattle and Cancún on Nov. 6.

The new flights between Portland and Mexico will be operated with Boeing 737 aircraft, which offer passengers dual 110-volt and USB power outlets at every seat. The flights will also offer Alaska's inflight entertainment system, a handheld video-on-demand device featuring more than 70 hit movies, along with television programs and other entertainment. The inflight entertainment players are complimentary in first class and available for $8 in the main cabin. Customers can also enjoy onboard meal service, including a hot meal or the airline's Signature Fruit and Cheese Platter.

Flight times and introductory fares will be available on alaskaair.com once the DOT approves Alaska Airlines' request for service, which takes up to four weeks.

Delta expanding int'l flights out of Sea-Tac: link here. New flights to Hong Kong and Seoul. I flew the London route last week and it was less than half full going out and maybe half full coming back -- wonder how those economics work. BA already flies a 747 on the route daily. Really makes you realize how little chance PDX has of getting very many new int'l flights. I'd love to see someone like Norwegian open a route to Gatwick; that seems marginally more likely than Delta adding cities when they have an "international gateway" 180 miles to the north.

I've heard that the SEA-LHR loads are pretty bad so far. I know that the route just started a couple months ago, but having a plane half full just isnt good business. I still think PDX will get a London flight with the next 3 years, as they are starting to receive more 787s, which would be the ideal plane for the route.

I know that Delta was talking about starting a PDX-CDG route, but I'd rather see Air France start the route myself.

According to airliners.net (link), United Express is ending PDX's routes to Eugene, Los Angeles, Bend, and Seattle in September.

Im thinking that Uniteds flights from PDX-SEA and PDX-LAX were on the chopping block because of Delta's startup of the same routes. PDX-EUG, thats a surprising one, i always thought that flight was full.

I flew LHR-SEA a few weeks ago, and it was half empty as well.

But, load factor does not equal profits.
I am sure Delta will keep that route for a while as a strategic way to build up the Seattle hub if nothing else.

Seems like Delta is kind of bullying United out of the PNW. I wonder what cuts are next from United?

I don't think we'll see any mainline cuts from United, they're just pulling their Brasilia fleet out. I've flown United to every hub they fly to out of PDX (except Houston) and the flights are always packed.
