I am not sure that Regina needs a newer or (especially) a larger version of the Brandt Centre. What events in the past year or two have sold out all 6,136 seats? I can only think of one Pats game last season that came anywhere close to filling the Brandt. Admittedly I don't go to concerts, so perhaps someone can help me with this. But to me, it seems those existing 6,000 seats are the right size for Regina and we don't really need any more. The Brandt Centre I believe is structurally sound and can operate for another 20 years without being replaced. I agree that once the Riders' new stadium is complete, then long-term planning can perhaps begin towards the goal of ultimately replacing the Brandt. However, I hardly think we need to compete with the CUC in Saskatoon. I think only one arena of that size is really financially viable in Saskatchewan, and I'm perfectly fine with Saskatoon having that arena. Most large concert tours aren't likely to book in both Regina and Saskatoon anyway. I would rather have one successful arena than two struggling, largely empty ones. When it comes to growth and large projects, it's time to consider the real needs of the whole province and not get locked in a competitive we-need-to-have-the-same-things-as-the-other-city mentality.

This is why Saskatoon wins. Because there is next to no one there who thinks this way.

I think the Brandt Center is ok but the building directly around it, notttttttttttttt so much. I'm of the opinion that any building that is orange should be torn down and rebuilt. Just leave the Brandt Center and the Agribition building. When you look at it on google earth, it is such a mess of buildings now. I'm still surprised they actually fixed a litter bit of the Canada Center building. They really need to repave the whole lot. I would like to know how the new stadium will affect the Exhibition Grounds. Will it cost more for trade shows and such to rent that buildings.




Does anyone have info on the lot on Avonhurst before Sherwood where they demolished a small church building down. A nice 2 story condo would fit in there nicely.

Was driving over the Ross St bridge. Wow, they are moving fast on the demo. What is that big yellow machine their using.

Really really dumb question. Can you legally build a small 1 bedroom house in the city. I keep getting told that the city would not allow that.


Off topic: Avoid or keep in mind that Auto Maxx Wash (formly Car Wash.ca) next to the north Super Store. The new owner kicked me out for using the soap brush and water wand thing at the same time. WTF.

I was looking at a Harmony show home and the girl (actually I think it may have been Katrina Stettner who is the owner) was telling me about a house they had built down the street and I swear she said it was a one bedroom (although this was awhile ago.)

I wouldn't personally build a one bedroom house (condo, yes) because I can't see it having the resale value.

They build more than you'd think.

There are no rules on the number of bedrooms, only on the minimum and maximum sizes of the whole house, relative to the lot size.

There was a house in The Creeks with only one bedroom as well. In general these houses are planning on basement development to provide more rooms.

Those guys at Auto Maxx are awful. Although I haven't been yelled at, I have seen how they treat their customers. They are always barking and screaming at people, purposely making people wait in line for no reason, kicking people out because their vehicles are too dirty. I will never go back...I'm not sure how they will stay in business.

If the Agridome was indeed built that way with the idea of expansion in mind, it would certainly be a lot easier for the city to reach the proverbial 18k seats if we want to attract and NHL team

I am pretty sure that is incorrect, but I would be happy to be proven wrong. Besides popping the roof alone would not help as seats already go to the outside of the building. You would also need to expand the building envelope. When you start doing that, you are pretty much rebuilding the place.

I have not heard of the Brandt Centre being able to "raise the roof", as it were. The expansion plans I have heard were as Stormer relates: filling in the west side with seats (similar to what was done with the east side), and having the concessions face the other way (into the outer hallway), so as to remove the lineups from the concourse.

If the Brandt can indeed raise the roof height, that might be beneficial, if only to allow a scoreboard to be put back at centre ice. That scoreboard was ostensibly removed because potential shows which wanted to book the Brandt didn't feel there was enough unobstructed air height to meet their requirements.

I would love a condo but MLS listings are failing me on any thing under 200000. Lowest I saw was like 380000. I think in the long term a house would suit me fine. There are some houses under 200000 but they usually don't have a basement or are in a shady area. I would really like to live outside of the city but again nothing in my price range.

Housing in Regina is overpriced. That's why I live at home and pay rent to my parents.

I would love a condo or perhaps a house in Regina at a reasonable price. Unfortunately I'm only one person, and the days when one working person could affordably purchase a house seem to be long past. I'm saving up my money, but it's gonna be a while yet.

Yes, housing is massively overpriced here now, and unfortunately it doesn't look like it's going to correct itself for many years. A single person with a full-time working-class job used to be able to afford a house, but that's just not possible any more with the average price being well above $350,000. The only options well below that are in bad neighbourhoods.

Condos are the same, and are also hugely inflated. And because of that, apartments are also inflated. I remember when I moved out of my parents' place about 6 or 7 years ago I was looking at $500-$700/mo if I rented alone. Now for those same areas you are looking at a minimum of $1000-$1200 for similar size.

It's really unfortunate.

Regina, and Saskatoon too for that matter, just caught up to the national average (actually still slightly below). The only reason we were so affordable before is because our economy was in the shitter and we were losing population every year. Hard to justify a normal priced market when your province's population is shrinking.

Going back further, people didn't generally buy their first homes until they were well into their careers in their 30s or so, this started shifting downward and all of a sudden, people in their mid-20s expected to be able to buy property. It's now moving back up a bit. And the rental situation it starting to improve a bit as well with new apartments being constructed for the first time in years (again... Tough to convince people to invest with a shrinking population).

Was definitely depressing to be in uni and see the housing market get further and further out of reach though.
