My observation is that at Broadway the staff are partly stopping people from boarding, and partly telling passengers to get off the train. It's not a full walkthrough like it would be if the train were going out of service. That was also at rush hour though, so they might be more thorough when it's less busy. I remember an earlier post from someone saying that staff wouldn't let them ride into the pocket.
Also referring to the point about Metrotown turn-backs, there is a pocket track just past Metrotown that can be used for turn-back trains. It's normally just used for storing trains except during track maintenance or service problems.
