Thanks for that -- interesting from that angle. The crown is more interesting than I expected, although I still miss the accordioning from the first rendering we saw.

You can also see more clearly how tall the theater itself will be -- comes up to the sixth floor of the Neumont University/Old Tribune building...which is actually the 7th story since there's a mezzanine between the first and second floors. Anyway. Taller than I expected maybe.

I absolutely love that idea.

They do that a lot here in L.A., particularly on Wilshire and also Sunset. I've always liked the idea, and think it would work great on the Neumont Building

I think only one is going.

I was hoping both would go. With that wide of a mid-block connection to Regent Street there's an even better chance of making it a vital place.

If someone were to tear down both buildings just south of the Neumont Building, I wouldn't wan't the mid-block thoroughfare to be any wider than the Brazilian grill. Instead, I'd want a 10+ story University classroom and/or dormitory expansion from level two up, expanded across both parcels, where the first level would have a tunnel thoroughfare in place of the Brazilian grill, and two corner retail stores facing Main, Neumont Universtiy, and Regent street, which would take the place of the second building south from Neumont.

I was thinking it would be a great opportunity for either residential or fine dining to develop alongside there with outdoor seating along the alley.

Fifty years ago this summer, 100 seagulls took flight on Salt Lake City’s Main Street — and stayed there for decades.

Now, 65 of them sit in cardboard boxes in a storage room in a dilapidated theater, waiting for their new home to be built.

The other 35 are missing.

The bronze-on-nickel seagulls are part of a sculpture, "The Gulls of Salt Lake City," by California artist Tom Van Sant. The sculpture was installed in 1964 in the then-new Prudential Federal Savings building.

That building, at 115 S. Main in downtown Salt Lake City, is the last of several to be demolished to make way for the city’s new performing arts center. By the end of last week, only the central steel superstructure from which the entire building once hung remained.

Crews removed "The Gulls" before demolition began and put the birds in storage. City officials want "The Gulls" included in the performing arts center’s future.

"The city’s been very deliberate about saying we want them incorporated," said City Councilman Stan Penfold. "The seagulls are going in the building, someplace."

"The Gulls" were incorporated in the original design of the Prudential Federal. Van Sant collaborated with the architect, William Pereira, who is best known for designing San Francisco’s iconic Transamerica Pyramid.

"It came to be one of my first large architectural [projects]," Van Sant, now 83, said in a phone interview Friday from his home in Santa Monica, Calif.

Van Sant designed and built the sculpture himself and installed the gulls with the assistance of master welder Timothy E. Smith. It consisted of 100 gulls made from electro-deposited bronze on nickel, which made them lightweight. Van Sant attached the birds to three stainless steel rods, 120 feet long, held in tension between the roof and a sunken garden below street level...

That's pretty cool. I looked at other projects they are working on and it neat to see that they are also working on the Transbay tower in San Francisco. The building that was torn down was a cousin to the Trans America Pyramid in SF and now the NPAC is a cousin to an SF landmark. Being a Bay Area expatriate that makes me feel better losing the Prudential Federal Building.

This design is quite tame compared to other projects. It's almost too bland, and too much like a lot of other projects being built with that L-shape in the front. It really doesn't look like Caesar Pelli was involved much in the design of this at all. I'm actually disappointed. The renderings look great, and all the glass and lights will make it shine, but it's not an exemplar design. The renderings are just eye candy.

I for one hope that only the Braza Express building is demolished for the midblock walkway. I think a 24' wide walkway is plenty wide, plus the Braza Express building is a non interesting single story building while the one next to it has is a much more interesting two story structure, not to mention the massive renovation that was performed on it several years back to turn it into a residential building, including a pool.
