The Seasons at Denver Street Apartments have applied for their building permit. They will be demolishing the existing building on the SE corner of Denver Street and 400 South and replacing it with a 6 story building. One floor will be underground.

Oops. It wouldn't surprise me if this was an oversight with the way this project has been managed... We're two years+ into demo and construction and still not a lot to show for it. I just hope they are able to still do some of the cool facade work like the Rex facade.

Reminds me of a children's book where a steam shovel dug and dug until it got stuck, so they built a library on top of the shovel and converted the steam shovel into a boiler to heat the library.

I look forward to following this one. There was also a very nice apartment project announced for around 400 South and I think around 900 East. Maybe a little bit in to the south from 400. Anybody know or remember what I'm talking about. I was wondering if that was off the ground yet.

I just noticed that there is a big red sign on the side of the former Zim's building that say's Impact Hub. Nice to see this project moving forward.

Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel.

Really, that book and The Little House (also by Virginia Lee Burton) were some of the first books to get me hooked on architecture, construction, urban planning...The Little House in particular has a country home that becomes suburban and eventually urban, surrounded by skyscrapers. Very Pixar Up-y.

One would think.. I know for a fact, space is very tight in this area. There is a small alley/lane that they bring in supplies with big rigs that enters on 2nd south going south..

While the crane extensions might be easier to take apart, the base of the crane is no joke and would take a pretty big crane to lift out.. Of course it's possible, I'm just interested in the engineering behind something like this.

I made a call in regarding the Flower Patch demo, and all they could tell me is that they're doing the demo of the building, and that there are no plans that they are aware of for a building to be built back on it. I'm not sure if I understood them correctly, but I think they said that the property is owned by Grand America.

Back in '97, there was some controversy with Grand America and the Flower Patch. Flower Patch wouldn't sell. So, the City and Grand America were involved in negotiating something or even looking into eminent domain because of its blighted nature. Grand America's original proposal had a 14-story office tower proposed for that spot in the same architectural style as the Grand. Can anybody find the original rendering?

Between this and the view from the top of 4th south, this is one of my favorite views.

Yes that was the case, but Flower Patch recently sold the property to Grand America.

Thanks for the mock up Orlando. Wow, that does give it perspective! I'm all for it, but I can appreciate why some would find it a bit overwhelming at this point. I would hope that they would really give West Temple a lot of thought as far as the street engagement goes. Of course the tower design, but also the street design and engagement is where this forum should really get involved and militant if need be.

I can't find the original rendering, but I do remember the 14 story tower proposal and the whole eminent domain drama. Would be very cool to see it finally rise, as it would greatly improve the developments State st presence. If I'm recalling correctly, didn't they also have plans for something like 8-10 stories on the SE side of the development, fronting State and 600 S?

I love it.. Go big or go home..

Another thing I've been thinking about is whether they will need a tunnel or not if they go with The Shilo site.... Having a tunnel would mean additional construction to the SP and who knows if there is even underground access or if that would mean working around foundations/main support structures etc..

I think if the Shilo site is the one, a simple walk across the street to the front enterance would do like Denver's Hyatt. And maybe another reason why this might be the favorite site.

Denver's Hyatt is about the same distance to their convention center with no tunnel or skybridge.
