There isn't a lot to update. I know that the City Council will discuss the budget at tonight's Council meeting and one item is funding with the County a consultant to help with the RFQ process which would select a developer for the CCH.

Yeah, I figured as much. Thanks for the update.

I was hoping for some secret, back room handshake stuff.. The room where off the record deals are being made. We know that there are(hopefully) developers already in line and the chosen site is just a matter of waiting for everything else to line up before the announcement.

I drove by yesterday and it didn't really look further along than the last photo update. This was from the State Street side though

I don't know that anything substantial has happened in over a month. Does anybody else know? Everyday that I drive past, it looks to be in the same position ever since the steel was installed on the second floor.

Also, someone had mentioned that Ivory homes may be buying the parcel on the northwest corner of 300 S & 200 E. FYI: That corner is zoned D-1 and would require a building height of atleast 100 ft.

Convention Center Hotel:
I met with some people a few weeks back in my office. One works for a reaestate & investment company here locally, and the other is a downtown developer. I asked them about the convention center hotel, and if they knew anything. They informed me that they had actually just came from a meeting regarding the CCH right before our meeting. After a bit of discussion I asked them where the site was going to be. They informed me that no official site has been picked yet, but that those involved do have a favorite site in mind. Both of the clients were a bit saddened that it wasnt the Royal Wood Post-office site. They wanted to see the old soviet bunker looking post office be replaced. But, they said that as of right now its beginning to look more and more like the leading & favorite site for the CCH is the.................Shilo Inn location.

Just a thought: That may explain why the shilo Inn hasnt been moving forward with their planned updates on the renovations.... But like I say, The information that I was provided by these two clients could change overnight. As of right now, its all just speculation and talk. So, dont consider the site set in stone exactly quite yet. But with the CCH going on the old shilo site that would reduce the total amount of hotel room inventory in DT. Would this give an opportunity for another hotel to be built as well? or would they add the hotel rooms into the CCH? or possibly they are reducing the number of hotel room inventory to give the other hotels in DT to absorb those rooms until the CCH is built? I dont know.... just all my thoughts...

Broadway Park Lofts by Pioneer Park:
I met with the developer of the project a few weeks back. They are currently installing a tall waterfall type drop feature on the back side of the elevator shaft in the center of the plaza area. Someone should stop by and take some pics. The pics that I saw looked really cool.

Wow, what updates!

I would love to see the CCH develop at the Shilo Inn location. Between having 99 West, Federal Courthouse and soon to be Air Hotel, with now maybe the CCH West Temple is starting to see it's far share of new highrises popping up.

I'm mixed if it becomes the Shilo Inn site. While I think a tower and ground level engagement would look great there, I really think SLC needs to go with the RWP site for the many reasons metioned here..

Shilo might open up the gates a bit for west of the Salt Palace but not as much as RWP.. And while the Shilo is an eyesore, I was willing to give it a fair shake if the remodel turned out nice.

Whaaat!! The Shilo Inn site. We all kind of dismissed that site a long time ago as too small. So, I'll be super interested now to hear how that site is going to work. Do you guys think there's going to be more demolition than just the immediate hotel and parking garage? Perhaps stretching down 200 So.?

If not then we could be looking at a very tall skinny 500 footer tower

I would really doubt it, because most of the buildings surrounding the Shilo are on the historic register. There is a small parking lot to the west that serves Christophers Steak House. West of there is one of the few mid-block walkways the city has, then the nice old two story Bertonili Block building, two small one story buildings then The Hotel. If I'm not mistaken both the Bertolini and The Hotel are historical, if not they should be. Next to the Hotel is the recently converted Patrick Dry Goods Lofts.

Down West Temple you have the Shilo Parking Garage, and on Pierpont the old SL High, (historical). Pierpont is one of the few mid block streets so I doubt the city wants much in the way of a skybridge traversing that street.

I still think the site is to small, it is definetly to small for any expo hall space, but I guess it could accommodate some meeting rooms. As has been said that is going to be one narrow tall tower to get 1,000 rooms + convention space. Even though that is what the talk was, I really doubt it will happen there.

I could however see the new owner either selling it or redeveloping it into another large (tall) hotel that serves the convention center, just without the mass amounts of convention space. Maybe something with just a few meeting rooms like most downtown hotels have. As we know, reports have shown and rumors are out there that there is a need for more than just the CCH, but a second large hotel in close proximity as well.

The Shilo site could be really great. It stretches downtown west, but not so far west that the skyline looks lopsided. Guests would have a straight shot to CCC or Gateway equally and they could connect to the SP underground fairly easily.

Here's a quick and dirty mockup of what they could possibly do. It might just be big enough if they built a parking structure south across Pierpont and shared with the Peery Hotel.

The Shilo spot may change as the developers do have more control over the site selection than the original idea of the County and City choosing the location first.

I had heard rumblings about the Shilo a few months ago but as it wasn't public, couldn't say anything. This of course was even before the bill was passed by the State Legislature.

The idea behind the Shilo location is that it would cause the tower to be substantially tall. I can say from my own estimations that it would be between 550' and 650' depending on the design and layout of the suites. The height was based on the 1000 room level. The RFP I think will state what has been stated in the media of 800 to 1200+ rooms in a single hotel.

800 rooms could give us something over 500' and 1200 rooms could push closer to 700' if the Shilo is the chosen location.

What I would love to see happen is that a developer comes in and says they will do a 1100 room hotel at RWP but will use the same space as the current Shilo + Shilo parking garage. That way the lot size for the hotel is smaller so it can't be a wall while at the same time RWP is redeveloped.

Time will tell what the final location is but I would bet against any location that isn't RWP or Shilo at this point.

Very interesting having the Shilo as a possibility.

So the natural question, where will they be expanding the Salt Palace? If not at RWP then really the only other spot I could see them expanding it is 300 W and 100 S into that parking lot.

I think the SP will inevitably have to expand independently of the CCH. The meeting space the hotel would add could buy us some time with Outdoor Retailer, but it's only a matter of time before they have to expand more.

I should say that OR isn't the only driving factor for a future expansion of the SP. Comic Con is also behind a push as well. The September event will be utilizing the entire exhibit hall of the SP again, like they did with the FanX event. They are also going to utilize some space in the surrounding hotels as well as a way to try to spread out a bit so it doesn't feel so cramped inside.

I don't know how they are going to succeed in spreading it around as they will need something to make people go to the utilized hotels other than just a booth to purchase t-shirts/movie posters or the like. I am interested to see how this will work.
