I think the thing to remember about the arial photo of Landowne is that it is not only the stadium which is undergoing renovation, it's the entire park.

Look at that photo of all the development going on in and around the stadium, and then look at how the site used to look up until a few years ago.

No question the development going on there is impressive. Whether or not the stands on the one side should have been torn down or had its roof replaced or not, the effect of all the greenspace being added around the stadium on the gameday experience for fans is going to make attending a game so much better than at the old Frank Claire.

"So much better" than what used to be the worst sports venue on Earth? That's quite the endorsement. But I agree. It's definitely an improvement.

That would be an interesting thread topic

But now that you mention it, "old" Frank Clair Stadium, especially in the dying days of the Rough Riders, really had a drab look to it that not many stadiums could match. The classic image burned into my mind is a gloomy, overcast day, a barely half-full stadium surrounded by asphalt and cement, a bad team on the field... it looked like a scene out of a domestic soccer league in a small, dying industrial city in a former soviet republic.

The renovated FKS will better reflect the beauty of the city of Ottawa.

I reject your claims to the title of worst sports venue on Earth. Clearly you have never been to the old Winnipeg Arena.

The old Winnipeg Arena really was a dump although it had great atmosphere when full (kinda like Taylor Field is now). I think the worst one I've ever been in was the Kingdome in Seattle. Dark and depressing, especially with only 8k fans in it. Current venues for consideration would have to be McMahon in Calgary and the Big O in Montreal (even though it looks great from the outside). McMahon is not even worth discussing as a piece of architecture, basically its two high school stands and if anyone was at the Heritage Classic or Grey Cup you'd know that it was like the lower levels of the Titanic in the concourse areas (a crushing sea of humanity). It should never host another major event IMO, especially with all these new facilities coming on board.

What's the deal with Calgary and their lack of a new stadium? All this talk about Calgary/Alberta's economy doing so great and all this money pouring into the province, yet they can't build a new stadium? Are there even any talks going on?

McMahon is getting old and outdated but it's still serviceable (it was heavily renovated before the 1988 Olympics which bought the place a few more years). Calgary isn't quite at the point where Winnipeg/Hamilton/Regina were, when stadiums in those cities deteriorated to a point where replacement made good sense.

That said, I'm sure that with McMahon crossing the 50 year mark it won't be long before a new stadium is planned and built there.

Why would money flowing into the province = a new stadium? Calgary is building a $250 million public library, the $170 million National Music Centre, just finished a new rapid transit line, the extension of two existing lines, and doubling the size of the airport. We also need a new convention centre and hockey arena. We have bigger fish to fry than a new stadium, when the one we have works fine for now.

That said, it is undergoing a small renovation as we speak. New turf, a new jumbotron, and I believe some new seats as well.

No offense, but putting lipstick on a pig, doesn't change the fact that it's still a pig.

Calgary supposedly one of the best cities in Canada will have the worst stadium in the country within a few years.

CFL is not a priority in Calgary like it is in Saskatchewan. Thats just a cold hard fact.

The city isn't going to pay a dime and neither is the province and Flames need a new arena so I don't see them building both since its all on their own dime.

Yes, servicable when Stamps are playing Hamilton. Not so good when there's +30k in there and you can't move. Still, no one seems to be complaining here so no big deal I guess.

Well that's if you think Calgary is one of the best City's in Canada. If you like miles of concert and sprawl then Calgary is for you. I will never roll into your 170 million music center nor a 250 million library but i bet you will attend a game in Regina's new stadium?? Out of curiosity are you from Calgary chad, It is pretty easy to tell regarding mentality towards eastern Canada who a true western is when posting. You boost Calgary like crazy on the national forum but yet if i recall your location changed several times before that location. I have no problem i just think its funny when people consider them self's a Calgarian or western'er simply because you moved there or work in the oil patch

Well I've lived in 4 of the 5 largest cities in the country (and several of the smaller ones), so yeah I do think Calgary is one of the greatest cities in the country. I happen to have a vast amount of experience on the subject. You obviously don't know Calgary if you think that all there is to it is concert and sprawl. That's as stupid as me saying "Well all there is to Montreal is exurbs and a hill." I've lived here longer than any city other than my hometown in Ontario, and even though I made more money in Toronto, I still like living here better. Clearly I have my reasons. Why ask questions to which you already know the answer? I don't have any "mentality towards eastern Canada," I'm from the east, and I support it as much as I do the west. I just happen to live in Calgary, so that is the city I post most often about, just like everyone else.

It's funny, you say you "have no problem," yet... I support your city in one thread, and then almost immediately you try to trash me in another. Seems like a problem, for pretty much no reason. You must be a real winner.

If Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Edmonton and Montreal can have nice NHL and CFL venues, I know Calgary can do it too!

Agreed. Unfortunately, we currently have neither. So we have to build both, and I think an arena will win the contest of which to build first, since people seem to care more about that.
