I agree, no matter which direction you approach this building as a pedestrian at ground level it is just a nightmare. New cladding won't fix this, obviously, it will just make it a little shinier in the skyline...

Our family owned the property and I can still remember the marble and brass entrance. It was sold as part of the redevelopment. We were fortunate enough to acquire one of the other banking halls farther up Main Street.

I agree The development is so isolating and the cause of the tragic Portage and Main barricades.

The wrong architectural decision can be with us for generations.

I hope we can finally start to move forward in an enlightened and progressive direction.

Scary thing is in 50 years there will be a city councilor or two that will want to keep 360 Main (Trizec) as a historic building and not allow it to be redeveloped.

Do you cats remember this stellar proposal? It's from an international design competition several years back to consolidate visions of Portage and Main.

If I had a zillion dollars I would build a second building next to Artis on Main over the underground mall and have a pedestrian bridge crossing from there over Main Street into a second new highrise situated next to the MTS building. Such is the stuff of dreams.

Spent a good part of last Saturday in downtown Fargo. What a dynamic place! I have a hate on for the hotels near I29 though. There are only 3 downtown hotels there, 2 booked solid and the other too rich for my blood. I want to end up like Fargo, but our downtown is too far gone for that. And much too large.

This is a little OT, but I was curious if anyone knows what building used to be at the NE corner of Markham and Gull Lake (in Waverley Heights). It came up in another thread and since then I've asked around and have heard everything from an elementary school, a convenience store, a Manitoba Hydro building, a parking lot, a residential house than caught fire and had to be demolished, a building related to the adjacent CN rail line, etc.

Just curious since I used to live in the area and I've always wondered. Alternatively, does anyone know where I could find out such information?
