Not to pick on Edmonton, but in spite of some very nice new proposals I saw some serious ugly. This PoMo crap some architect half digested and excreted onto the landscape is one such building. It's not done yet, but the corner it's on is so prominent and it's such a shame this is what will occupy it in the not too distant future.

Here's hoping it doesn't continue as shown. It looks right out of the 80's / 90's. Whoever thought that brown brick with blue glass was nice needs to have their eyes checked. But even beyond that the form is so messy and half assed. Aren't there supposed to be 3 of these turds too?

But yeah, work was halted on this project months ago; as it turns out, contractors like to be paid, and don't like not being paid. The guys behind this project have always seemed really sketchy to me. I'd give it a 30-40% chance of resuming, let alone finishing.

Didn't one of them go "missing" amid rumors of a kidnapping and ransom, then the guy suspiciously reappeared 3 days later refusing to tell anybody anything about where he was?
I vaguley remember something really dodgy like that.
So in the event someone else doesn't take over to at least complete the one building that was started, what happens to what's already there? Forever crane a la the Ryugong Hotel?

Sadly that would look better than if they completed it.
That building is not great, but I wouldn't call it "ugly".
But knowing Edmonton, there's a possibility that building will be stucco and have more of a commie block appearance.
It's funny that every city seems to have their own ugly schtick. Edmonton's seems to be stucco and lately it's bad PoMo designs. I find Calgary of late has a thing for Ketchup and Mustard colours which is just horrible.

Agreed. The offices look less bad than the shopping centre, but the inevitable traffic nightmare that will occur when IOL moves in will be a plague on the south of the city.

Also forgot to say that at least they didn't do brown for the punched window sections. Sadly even with the white it's still pretty bad. The teal glass doesn't help either.

A few examples:
I don't like the pastels, but I like the colours on the Max Bell. Only thing I don't like about it is that they just threw that cladding on top of the brown brick, which doesn't mesh well.
