Yep. If you go north out of the main lobby in the station onto the overhead passageway that goes to the seabus you can see the tail track (but that's marked as a fare paid zone even though some people just use it to get to the heliport). Or you can go into the parking lot that abuts the east side of the station - at the north edge of it you can look down and see the tail track.

And that actually does help people who are unfamiliar with the system Also, the waiting times until the next train is a helpful piece of information (especially at night when the frequency is reduced). And there are still multiple destinations on the Expo-Line.

Early morning and late night might be different. Since the Evergreen yard is located between Coquitlam and Inlet Centre, and some trains are still going to be parked at Edmonds yard or even the pocket tracks at Lougheed, there could be trains terminating at Coquitlam, Inlet Centre, Lougheed, or even thru-run to New Westminster.

Isn't there a risk that the train is parked for an indefinite period on the tail track? (I don't ride that line regularly, so it's an honest question)

Yes, unless it's taken out of service and stored on the tail track.

It's not just that - after the rush hours some of the inbound trains that arrive at Waterfront are deadheaded back to the storage yard without making any stops, so you wouldn't want to board one of those trains either.

But the attendants are told by the control centre which trains are going out of service so that they can ensure nobody is on board before the trains pull out of the station.

Found this pic by Just a Gwai Lo -
They've installed a ticket machine at the Seabus / Waterfront entrance from the HeliJet terminal.
Are they installing a faregate or card reader inside the door?

Card reader. Actually you see it to the immediate right of the TVM.

What they need are led signs at the bottom of the stations so I don't have to run up the stairs to find out it's not the train I want. That or announcements like on the canada line.

yeah, the Canada Line announcements were a life saver. Many times I would hear my train announcement as I was approaching the station and I would know to bust my 🞵🞵🞵 up to the platform.

Interesting the shelter looks to have a roll down door build into it. The brown door into the building must not double as an emergency exit.

Perhaps they will do the same thing you see in some airport systems in other parts of the world where you obtain a free ticket that lets you pass through the station to get to the heliport.

Yeah, there's a bunch of glass doors that are the emergency exits. It's been there since 2012 from Google Maps, so just the machine is new.

Unless you are at Columbia or Lougheed where the lines split I really do not see a point in adding more digital signs considering if you miss the train there will be another one in another minute or two. The canada line is an exception because not only is there a wait upwards of five minutes between trains but if you don't want to switch at another station you might wait upwards of ten minutes for another train. You need all the warning you can get about what train is arriving.

^ There are a variety of reasons why Canada Line-style display are warranted all along the shared length of the Expo Line. South-bound commuters heading into Surrey need to know whether the train is on the Expo Line or the Millennium Line and they can be boarding at virtually any station on the line. When a short-turn train is occasionally run, the reader display announces this. Furthermore, the displays can be programmed to display important system messages, like track maintenance, early closures, etc. I think that a system-wide overhaul of the LED signs on the Expo and Millennium Lines is warranted asap to bring them in line with those on the Canada Line, and hopefully the Evergreen Line uses adopts the latter style, as opposed to the former.

From what I remember the message on the PA system in the train and on the platform is slightly different if the train is being put "out of service" versus "just reversing direction"

Even the the Canada line as a different message.

Usually if the train is just pulling into waterfront and will be reversing direction the message is something along the lines of "Waterfront terminus station" But if the train is being put out of service the message is something along the lines of "This train is going out of service would all passangers please disembark" Or something like that. And they repeat the message a good 3-5 times

The reason you see people stay on the train is they want a seat It is quite common to see people get on at granville or burrard and go to waterfront just to get a seat. I've done it countless times in the past. I've also done it at broadway by back tracking to vcc-clark. This is how you get those prime seats

There are waits on the Expo line too. Even during rush hour I've waited up to 5 minutes for a train. At night combined service is 5 minutes, so at times when you have that 10 minute wait for the train it would be nice to know (it's like enough time to get a coffee or something).

In Portland, they have live departure times on Google maps. I believe Translink implements the same GTFS-realtime open API, but the functionality is missing on Google maps.
