Nice angle. Really cool seeing a new downtown core springing up. Metro tower and Sovereign bringing a 'big city' feel to the area.

It's not one of the more popular designs amongst crane operators.

I have never seen such a crane design and cannot understand how it's being used for anything? I was first thinking that the cabin it is being lifted and the cable it is attached to is just not visible in the photo, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I don't know what I am really looking at.

The cab is actually mounted on the jib of the crane. This design was popular in the 70's and 80's. This crane is a pecco sk1200 built in 1967 and was originally designed to be run from a box wired to the crane on the ground. For what ever reason in the late 60's/70's they modified them to have to operator out on the jib and some had a box built in the mast of the crane. If you look at vintage constuction photos from the 80's you will see mostly this design. It does help in some circumstances today if the placement of the mast leads to a lot of blind spots for the operator. Having put Christmas lights on this make of crane before I know how much the jib moves up and down quite a bit. It's like a roller coaster for the operator, as well the controls are wired backward from most cranes these days adding to the "allure".

Thank you for all the details. I think i have never seen one and I am quite fond of construction cranes.

Would you happen to have a link to a photo of one? Quick googling didn't bring any satisfying results...

I'm actually more excited for this Sears redevelopment than Station Sq. I wouldn't be surprised if upon completion the retail podium and Sears flagship will be sold to Ivanhoe C.

Big doubts that the flagship will be one for Sears...

Hey Klazu,

Sorry for the late response. Yeah, there doesn't seem to be too many pics of boom ride tower cranes available,, which i find kinda odd but then again they were mostly popular back when you had to take your film in to get developed. Here are a couple of pics by our operator. One from in the excavation and one from in the cab.

There are 3 cranes for sure like this that I know of today that are running in the city.

1- Ours/Two Pillars (Pecco SK1200 erected at site 1 Station Square in Burnaby)
2- Newway (Linden, currently erected in Newwest at the Victoria Hill development at Columbia and McBride)
3- WhiteWater (Pecco SK 1200 and not sure where it's erected at the moment)

For what it's worth the height for phase 1 at station square is 126 meters from ground level to top of spire.

Right now it looks like the 2nd phase height will be 168.76 meters from ground to top of spire. This is preliminary and is subject to change of course.

News today that Sears is being sold off by its parent company. I guess this means we won't be seeing a new 7 tower, $1 billion development in Metrotown anytime soon.

Gold House, two 38 story towers between Modello and Silver on Beresford is preregistering. Signs have been erected at the site.

Aldynne on the Park is also preregistering. Looks to be about 34 stories across the street from Central park.
