Central Park has come a long way and gone through some what of a renissance in the last several years.

Although not all social issues sourounding this Park have been addressed, and may never be, it shows that significant change can be made over time. I have spent much time visiting this urban park in the last few years, where as 5 years ago, I would not have done so. I new it's reputation and background very well. It is not the same place it was in the past. New immigrants and their taking up residence in this area of Winnipeg are a major factor in this change.

It's a pleasant park and I like it too, but let's not get carried away... there are usually not very many people in the park, especially when the splash pad is off. I would not hold it up as a model of a well-used, well-loved urban park. Maybe it'll get there someday, but I don't think it's there yet.

But in all seriousness this park certainly has done extremely well lately. There are more people here than just the splash park. During daytime hours there are people in the park and the turf almost always has soccer games or some kickball going on when the temps are warmer. The problem with this park is that it becomes dysfunctional at late hours, as in post 9pm. This is sympotamic of the neighbourhood being primarily residential only alongside the social issues with this neighbourhood.

i go to central park quite often in the summer and am always struck by how active it is....go there on a warm sunday evening....its bustling.

ive been there in -30 and theres families out skating on it so i dunno it gets decent use and love how its vibe changed seemingly overnight

ive been there quite a bit at 2 3 in the morning the last few years its really changed dont have to nock to get into max as often anymore for instance

I don't know who your were directing your post toward, my comment or posters in general.

Taking that into consideration, I'll quote myself.

My comment does not label Central Park as some utopian-urban-greenspace in the core, but as a park that has seen worse days in the late 90's, and has progressed to a point where people and families are slowly returning, taking back the neighborhood, one step at a time.

It's a night and day scenario. Positive strides have been made.It still has a reputation that people will remember. Similar to that of living downtown. It will take time, changing the fabric of neighborhoods is not a quick and easy thing to do. But it's happening here.

Siloam Mission plans addition

Siloam Mission will announce a $30.5-million expansion campaign this morning that will almost triple its ability to house homeless people.
It will also double the mission's ability to serve meals.
"This will be a huge campaign," Siloam communications co-ordinator Donna-Lynn Baskin said Monday.
The mission has 65 supportive housing units and plans to add 160 more.
Siloam has acquired three adjoining properties on Princess and Stanley streets, including an old warehouse and a former sewing machine factory, for the four-storey addition.
Details will be unveiled at a breakfast event expected to draw 300 community leaders from the business, non-profit, academic, hospital and government sectors.
Executive director Floyd Perras said Monday Siloam hopes the three levels of government will cover at least half the cost through grants. "We're anticipating that after the governments get involved, we'll have to raise $12 million to $15 million," he said.

Siloam Mission is in great need of these extra units, as well as providing increased space to those who can use a meal. The 1st step is always to get those in need off the street, Not lying in it.

Parking in the 'Character Sector' of the Downtown Zoning By-Law from 2004 is not required at all for any new development or redevelopment of a property. Its provision is strictly voluntary...

This would fall into that category.

That is quite an ambitious expansion project... certainly decent looking for what it is, and I like that there's a bit of height to it. It might even turn out better than some of the new hotels by the airport. So is there going to be a laneway built along the south side of this project?

It is interesting that Siloam is expanding this much at a time when the north Exchange/Chinatown is undergoing a minor residential upswing with the construction of a new building (Freedom Tower) and the renovation of others (Bag Factory, Edge). Even though Siloam has a golden reputation for the programs and services they provide, I can't imagine that developers with projects either planned or under way in that area are thrilled about the fact that Winnipeg's largest homeless shelter will now be permanently entrenched a couple of blocks away in a way that ensures there will be a significant homeless population in the area for decades to come.

As for Bag Factory... love it. At first I thought it might be a tough sell given its relative distance from the amenities of the Exchange, but then it's only a couple of blocks up from Edge which seems to be doing well.
