I don't think we're going to get an amazing stadium or a horrible one. We're going to get something that is excellent in areas and not-at-all what we desired in others. That's why it really bugs me when people post photos of billion dollar NFL stadiums and say this is what we're getting because HKS built it. It's not in any way comparable. As much as I would love to see a unique stadium tailored for Saskatchewan (and the talk of a horseshoe Euro football stadium certainly makes me excited in that regard) I have the suspicion it is going to look like Winnipeg's. That's great, because that stadium is excellent except for its drainage, but it isn't quite what the design has been built up to.

As long as it looks nothing like Mosaic or the two-sided stadiums in the league, we all should be happy.

I'm all for building a roof, but let's not delude ourselves. We won't be getting any more big concerts.

All the "stadium" tours that are going across North America will do the American North/Canada during the summer and the American South during the winter. They won't come to Canada just to visit Regina.

There are legitimate benefits to having an all-season stadium, but big-time concerts during the winter isn't one of them.

At best we would get one additional concert a year.

I know this ship has sailed, but it's going to take me a while to get over the fact that they moved the project from the Dewdney downtown location (I know: ).

It could have been one of the coolest stadiums in Canada, and made that area just north of downtown incredibly vibrant.

I can only hope that the area north of the tracks there is developed regardless - with some more bars/restaurants and condos.

Agreed, it seemed way more viable to me in that location, and with that first design on this thread as well (even if no retractable roof, though not sure if games could be accommodated in there without the roof open).

Also, an indoor facility of that size would certainly be usable every day of the winter for local junior sports leagues, conventions, concerts etc - and even though the seating wouldn't be required for many potential purposes, and overall was not likely to ever be profitably run, the whole reason for getting provincial and federal funding was for it to be "multi-purpose". And I do think the venue has the potential to draw larger events such as stadium concert tours.

Maybe the title of the thread should be renamed to "Saskatchewan's CFL Stadium".

I think in the end corporate interests won out over what would be best for the stadium location. Companies like Harvard can make a lot of money potentially by developing real-estate in the old CP yards in the future as it's prime area for downtown expansion. So I think there was probably some "influence" passed around to keep any stadium out of that area.

Yeah, it's nothing more than Taylor Field in terms of usability, so there's no point in calling it a multi-purpose facility. It's a CFL stadium that will sometimes be used for high school and university games.

Yes politically they had to say Multi-Purpose to get support. Even in Rider Nation, people would of been less enthusiastic about a solely purpose built CFL stadium. However, it is still a multi-purpose stadium as the Rams will play there. And there maybe conference space in the area under the stands that could be rented year round?

Speculation is fun but we are literally weeks away from seeing this thing as it will be (with maybe a few small alterations during construction)

^ What do people expect from a stadium? Look at the event calendar for BC Place or Skydome... it's mostly events that could easily be held in an arena or convention hall. Home Show, Food Show, Monster Jam, Disney on Ice and in Toronto's case, Avicii and One Direction concerts. All things that could easily be held elsewhere. It's not as though there is some massive Rolling Stones or AC DC concert happening every month in these places.

It's the Roughriders that need the new facility... build it to their specs instead of spending hundreds of millions of dollars to create something that no one really needs. An outdoor stadium makes perfect sense.

I agree, and I think that's what should have been advertised from the beginning. But instead they tried to over-promise in order to sell it to the public. Easier to apologize than to ask for permission, and all that stuff.

The diversity and intended usage of the new Stadium is going to surprise all of you, this is not going to be used solely for the Riders.

The design is going to impress the majority of you and disappoint the rest until you experience a game in person. Change is hard to accept, but it's like many things, don't knock it until you see it in person or try it.

I think the redevelopment of the CP and Taylor Field land is far more exciting than the actual stadium itself. The stadium is almost a bonus if you ask me. That being said, I would be much more disappointed if they come short in North Central and the CP yards over coming short on the stadium.

10 years will see remarkable changes in the city, even if these 3 corresponding projects were the only development.

Yes that redevelopment and the North Central project is going to revive a less attractive part of Regina. Similar to what has happened to the area along 20th street in Saskatoon. A lot of new development and likely the demolition of old and decrepit homes in that area will bring change over the next few years. It would be nice as this area is so close to downtown that it become an area similar to cathedral with young people / retirees living in and making the core more vibrant.

This will be a major improvement over Mosaic, I know that. I am embracing the change and will be one of the first people with season tickets in this stadium. I look forward to the unveiling!

The reason it got moved had more to do with CP deciding that they wanted to keep the spur line and very little to do with Harvard wanting to develop the land.

To bad... I think they could of built over top of it. But this way it will be easier. But then my idea is not likely to fly Not that it had any bearing on the design anyway.

People are saying that the new stadium will allow new and exciting opportunities, but what would those be? I have yet to hear specifics. It will definitely be an improved experience for football games, but it doesn't appear that any new types of events are going to be possible that Taylor Field could not also have hosted.

I think it will be great without a roof and to me leaves the possibility now still of the brand center being re-built and expanded because we will still need a large indoor space for concerts and trade shows. More recently the LP had an article that announced that the Brandt center will have to be replaced in the next 15 years as is on its last life. Would much rather see our stadium with no roof and with the other 250 million it would cost for the roof, to build a new Brandt center at or around 15,000.

The stadium will be the catalyst to re-develop that entire area and make it a legit sports complex

I think that would be great! Similar in Size to CUC just more modern. Wow CUC needs to be replaced too. But I think a replacement is required, but I think more along the size of the Moose Jaw arena. Maybe 5,500-6,500 That would be a better size for the WHL. Also add more rinks to the Co-operators Centre for rec hockey. If we build the stadium and new 15,000 seat arena next to one another. Saskatoon residents might be a little ticked-off.

A new 16,000 seat arena in downtown, or existing site in Saskatoon would be a better idea IMO. As long as the upperbowl can be completely closed off. As was done in Winnipeg, before the Jets returned. The look of the upper stands open like they are in Saskatoon when I go to games makes me sad The lower bowl should sit 6,000 and the upper bowl should sit 8,000 with 2,000 for private boxes.

http://www.reedconstructiondata.com/project-leads/sample-leads/2014/04/22/9092387/

Project Description:

construction of a 33,000 seat, open air or roof-ready football stadium at Evraz Place. The project will be the new home for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. An evolution of the traditional side stand arrangement that creates more good seats, called the "infinity bowl", has been adopted. This bowl configuration is also good for adding temporary seats to increase the capacity for high profile events like the Grey Cup. Project features include; a focus on neighbourhood regeneration and community benefit; new plaza and outdoor spaces for events; a spectator roof providing an economic solution for improved spectator comfort; the ability to accommodate a closing (retractable) roof at a later date; a sunken bowl design to accommodate 33,000 fans with the ability to expand for big events; complementary to the current events and uses at Evraz Place; flexible revenue generating accommodation to respond to future needs and opportunities; a variety of lounges and suites that can be used year-round; a variety of modern fan amenities including individual seats with better views; sensible sustainability aspects specific to the Regina context - a balance of cultural, economic, and energy metrics; and suitable for stadium concerts.
