Ya -- the Winnipeg Charter. The only reason the City exists is because of the province. The province gives (and can take away) all the City's power. That's the only reason there needs to be.

Hey everyone,

New to the forums, kinda – I check this board almost weekly, figure it's probably time to start posting. My office is doing some remodelling that has me displaced to a different side of the building, which has given me a pretty good view of the apartment complex that's been flying up on Edmonton, and I figured I'd share.

The scale of this building is really lovely, especially from street level. I realize that this project has a social purpose, but I can't help but think about how awesome a bunch more of these would be if they were open to anyone. Especially if they put a couple of CRUs on the main floor.

Thanks for the post and welcome to the forum even though you've been registered since November(same as me). I agree about what you said. It really makes the area more gentrified and pedestrian friendly rather than a surface parking lot. If they turned these into 20 storey buildings that would be amazing.

The charter is just another way of saying the province likes to throttle the city when it tries to go its own way. Citing it as a reason the city can't do something is trivial, just like citing any law for why we ought not do something.

It's not like the city lacks its own regulations in other areas. And in the big picture the province needs the city more than we need them.

Even at six storeys it's great. These kinds of buildings fill parking lots and help create a continous streetscape. This one is scaled quite nicely in relation to its setting.

As Keh Vaughn said (welcome to the forum, by the way), having a few more of those scattered throughout downtown would be fantastic.

these projects will hopefully make the central area in downtown more noticeable. If the Sky City Centre gets built that would add the cherry on top.

I seem to recall that over a decade ago, Pootkao came up with a fanciful drawing for a wood-frame skyscraper in Winnipeg... clearly he was way ahead of his time

While it does seem like something whose time has come, the whole idea of mid-rise wood frame buildings would inspire a little more confidence if there weren't so many of those crappy two and three-storey matchstick apartment blocks where you can clearly hear every time your neighbours use the bathroom.

I'm impartial either way. But there's already houses built way closer than the new proposed ones. Way closer than the 4000' buffer they outlined.

Eh, I side with the businesses in this one. These guys have been operating in this area for over 50 years. If you start adding a few thousand residents to the area, the balance of power is going to shift completely. Homeowners are a huge pain in the ass. There is no way these these players could coexist in the long term and they know how disruptive their businesses are to the area better than anybody. I applaud them getting out in front of this before they end up in a situation where the residents have the ability to make life miserable for them...

I have worked on many of their disasters for the trades. They are all bad.
Centre Village had no electrical/mechanical room so the HRV, elect panel, Hot water tank, MTS/CATV cabinet, washer & dryer had to fit under the main floor stairs. What a joke. They give no thought to the actual construction of a building.

When you consider that Winnipeg accounts for such a tiny fraction of the urban condo market in Canada, I sure wouldn't bet on that project being here.

The signs on the sky city property witch were on wood frames have been taken down and now a set of metal poles are in place ready for new signage and the old aqua books building is horde not for what looks like remediation???
