When are they ever going to open the one slated for the old Hy's Mansion? It's insane they've been paying property taxes on an empty building for years.

its funny you say that. but I noticed a for lease sign on the exact podium tonight. see pic below. seems like it would make a good location for a elarge restaurant with a potential for patio, etc. Joey or CC anyone?

I found that confusing too.
I read the review and expected East Indian / Caribbean roti (pea-meal filled tortilla wrapping curried beef or goat).
- but found pics of a butter-filled bun with baked-on coffee frosting.

Is the "pappa" reference cultural - or a play on Beard Papa's?

Great!
Now someone just needs to see the potential (esp. with a Main Post Office redevelopment coming next door).
Ditto for the Bank of Montreal space on the Georgia side (nowadays a bank doesn't need an impressive high ceiling'd space).

Wow, way too many things are called roti.

I meant the malay spin on the indian roti bread, locally called roti prata. Not Caribbean stuffed roti and not the coffee buns which I just found out existed today.

Turns out that place is the coffee buns, guess my search for a good malay roti will continue

Sometimes the Caribbean roti is just used to dip into curry, rather than being stuffed or used as a wrapper.
But Caribbean curry is much thicker, like a stew, with meat and potatoes.
Historically, the Malay and the Caribbean rotis would both be derived from India somehow.

I've always thought the roti canai at Banana Leaf (Malaysian) was very good, the dipping sauce is very good too. (Tip: You can buy just the sauce to go, very good for entertaining/appetizers). Not really at the level of food I had when I was in Singapore, but pretty good.

When one has tasted the roti canai (named after Chennai, India where many of the East Indians from there immigrated to Malaya during the British era, and roti just means bread) in Singapore and Malaysia, one would know what's served at Banana Leaf or any of the local Southeast Asian restaurants as crappy. They don't even make it authentically like what they do over there, ie. thinning out the layers of dough by twirling and flipping them on a hot plate. Hopefully one day we have an international food court in a new mall somewhere downtown where something authentic pops up.

Roti just means bread, so that applies to coffee buns from Malaysia too. Yup, keep up the search for good canai/prata and do let us all know.

I love me a new coffeeshop, so I always try new ones in the City (it never stops, really). I had passed PappaRoti a few times but the last thing I would've thought about this place was coffee. That is, until I read this thread. So, I stopped by this past Monday for my regular mocha. It's pretty good (a bit too milky for me). I did not try their famous buns as I try to avoid pastries. I wonder if it will stand out above the Papa Beard's, the Bonchai's, or even that coffee bun place at Lonsdale Quay.

Talking of new coffee shops...
I've known about this one for a while but a passing conversation with another Cambie Street resident today confirmed to me that it's public knowledge:
JJ Bean is coming to Cambie Village!

Looking at YOU...

What's impressive is that you made it all the way from YVR and back in 2 hours!
