I found this aerial that predates the other two aerial I posted of Queen of Angels.

below: I thought this was the Victorian that appears in the aerials, but after I compared them I'm not so sure they match up.

Broadway Palace Market

The Schaber's Cafeteria building currently stands at 622 S. Broadway. I'm sure the postcard predates this wonderful building.

The elaborate grillwork on the facade appears in the interior arches as well. This must have been a stunning place!

That's correct. He was his Chef and put together the original menu for the place. Not sure when he left though.

Not really noirish, but cool anyway. Bert had a lot of friends and in 1938 they decided to show him how much. It's solid copper with silver plate. Weights 19 lbs. I've been told the names engraved are mostly LA business men and local politicians who favored the Paris Inn and Lucca's. If anybody would like a list of the names, email me your request at [email protected]. Be glad to share it.

This is the best I've found so far. It shows Desmond's department store in 1925 with the predecessor to Schaber's on the right.

LAPL date this picture as 1935, but it's obviously much earlier. On the left you can clearly see "622" and most of the word "MARKET" (I'm assuming it's the end of Broadway Palace Market). It's a shame the picture isn't a little wider.

Bert's place Lucca on 5th and Western. Bert's nephew Lawrence ( my dad ) was the general manager from 1945 until it closed in 1955. How sad a fast food place sits where it used too.

I've never seen side balconies arranged quite like that. It's almost like they were tacked on.
