They will continue to run the store as Price Choppers, not Giant Tiger.
It wouldn't surprise me to see this look exactly like a Price Chopper from the outside and a Giant Tiger from the inside. Unfortunate.

^ Part of the fun of going to Price Chopper is that you never know what kind of crazy fire-sale there will be on some product that Sobey's is overstocked on. That will end once NWC takes it over.

The same thing happened with Odd Lots on Wall Street... when I was a student I used to pop in there for some good overstock clearance deals. These days it is basically a Giant Tiger location.

Yeah, the Sobey's supply chain is now dead, so I don't really care what they're interested in feeding the public, this is going to be a Giant Tiger regardless of what they want to call it. Which is unfortunate.

I get that there are idiots everywhere, but did a corner like Stafford and Pembina - an intersection which is projected to figure prominently in the future of this city - really require another store capable of selling canned meat, oversized novelty camping chairs, and barbeque lighters shaped like a largemouth bass to stupid people?

This irks me to no end. Was the Dollarama on Taylor too far away?

I don't often shop at Giant Tiger, but I pop in occasionally. It does seem that they have increased their grocery offerings quite a bit in recent years. Yes, there are lots of frozen and canned items, but they do stock (at least downtown) a larger array of items including some produce, dairy, etc. It's definitely better than a Shoppers for grocery items. Having said that, it is a disappointment that something nicer couldn't have gone into Stafford and Pembina. A while back, I heard a rumor that DeLuca's was looking at this location. Now that would have been something.

Odd lots was the clearance center for NWC.

Either NWC have gotten better at not buying too much and having to clear it, or they have changed trucking companies and don't have the freight damaged goods to sell at Odd Lots.

If you want a store with interesting stuff go to G&L sales at 1010 Logan next to Wheelies Roller Rink. They have all sorts of overstock / bankruptcy and freight damage goods.

I know someone who used to work at NorthWest company. For the picture on the cover of the store brand frozen fried chicken they went out and bought KFC and took a picture of that. There were some other pretty shady things they did on the corporate level which is why she quit.

Good to know. When I was a kid, we used to buy all sorts of freight damaged goods from Able's Wholesale, back when they were on Higgins. Not sure what they have at their newer location on Notre Dame.

United Unlimited, on Dufferin near Arlington is another place with weird and unusual overstock items. Are they still in business?

Able's Wholesale on Notre Dame is closing out if not already closed (haven't been down that part of Notre Dame since the factory outlet at Mid West Garment closed down).

The building they are in was sold and suppose to be converted to apartments by Wintec Building Services. Free Press has an article on that and the lot on the west side of them.

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/bre...135725143.html

I was in United Unlimited for the first time about 6 months ago, and yes they do have a lot of weird stuff in stock.

I was told by somebody that the owners of G&L were the same people that use to own Caprice Distributors on Midland before they closed up.

Signage is up for a Shoppers Drug Mart in the Kildonan Green area next to the Sobey's. There's also a coming soon sign for the Tim Horton's at the corner of Plessis and Devonshire and some temporary signage is up on the Liquor Mart across the street where the old IGA used to be.

That Tim Horton's should be open around the beginning off June if the construction plan stays on schedule.

And I have been told it will take the place of the old one next to the oil change place on Regent in front of the Casino which will close down. That's one of the last of the original ones with no drive through. The only other one I can think of off hand is the rebuilt one at Main and Burrin.

There's no drive-thru at the one on Dakota either, as far as I know.

What about the 1848 Main St. location, although it's been a while since I looked. No drive through.?

I was hearing the exact same thing. It's a shame, really. They would have been a fantastic tenant and an awesome addition. They would have gone head to head with DiNardi which would have been nice considering I'd prefer to shop at DeLuca's any day.

I suspect the space was just too large at the end of the day.

That store was taken down and rebuild from the ground up about 2 years ago and they could not put a drive through in because of the lot configuration. They did enlarge the store though to seat a few more people.

I was told that this one and the new one on Plessis are owned by the same people. I think that they also own the one next to the Industrial Park on Dugald Road.

It's interesting that Sobey's as lead tennent, did not object to the Shoppers Drugs going in the same mall as it will have an impact on the Sobey's Drug deparment.

Everything but produce, meat and bakery really. It is very odd.

Would be good to get a decent sit-down restaurant in the area too, chain or whatever. Mr B's is about the same quality as something I make at 2 am when I'm starving, except they charge $13 a plate.

We are getting a Browns Socialhouse at the south end of the CRUs. Think Moxie's, Earl's, State and Main. It's on the developers website and they have confirmed it on social media as well.
