Damn. Those new streetcars have CLASS! Streetcars have gone from an 'out-dated' relic in the 70s and 80s to a retro nicety in the 90s and 2000s to a shining beacon of modern transit in the 2010s

I hope that Toronto will one day give all of its streetcar lines exclusive lanes and really take things to the next level of efficiency.

What I got from Wynnes announcement a few mins ago:

15 minute electrified GO service on ALL lines.
DRL
Hurontario LRT
Durham BRT
HSR between London and Toronto
Twin the entirety of highway 17

$29 billion in new infrastructure spending in this budget, $15 billion in Toronto.

Wynne announces $29 billion transit and transportation plan

http://www.thestar.com/news/queenspark/2...new_taxes_vows_pc_leader_tim_hudak.html#

Premier Kathleen Wynne says her Liberal government will spend $29 billion over the next decade on transit and transportation.

Speaking to a noon-hour Toronto crowd of about 500, ‎Wynne said among other things it will dedicate 7.5 cents of the gas tax and the HST on fuel tax — totalling more than $1.3 billion — to build new transit, roads, highways and bridges.

“We need an aggressive and serious investment in transit right here in the GTHA,” she said, referring to the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.

Wynne said the plan also includes new so-called dedicated revenue tools, redirecting existing revenue and debt financing.

Wynne was short of specifics, saying details will be revealed in the spring budget.

However, she did say there will be high occupancy lane tolls as laid out in last year’s budget.

She also explained two dedicated transit and transportation funds will be created — one for the GTHA and the other for the rest of the province. Wynne also noted the Green Bond program will be directed to the plan.

I assume you are joking about HSR between London and Toronto.

she said "frequent regional high speed rail from Toronto to Pearson, Kitchener, and London."

There was a bit of a quiet shock in the room when she said it that is for sure... nobody was really expecting it.

I can't see anything on the web about this. Maybe this is a joint effort between Toronto and the real London - The Atlantic Chunnel HSR3.

Wow, that is friggin awesome!! Good to see Wynne so dedicated to public transportation. $29 billion is probably the largest government investment in anything in Canadian history

Apparently confirmed transit projects (all uncertain until more info comes):
-15 minute electrified GO service on many lines
-DRL
-Durham BRT
-Hurontario LRT in Mississauga/Brampton
-Phase 2 of Ottawa Confederation Line
-Toronto-Kitchener-London HSR

As well, there is an apparent commitment to widen Highway 17 to 4 lanes.

Against that goof Hudak? It would be embarrassing if she didn't win. Maybe Ontario will see its first Greens in Provincial Parliament! Would also be quite awesome for Canada to have our first elected LGBT premier!

Investment of $29 billion, $15 billion earmarked for GTA, $14 billion for the rest of the province.

7.5 cents of gas tax revenue collected in Ontario will be redirected to permanently fund transit.

she doesn't need to win an election, she needs the support of the NDP for the budget. if she can't get that, then she needs to win an election. The province doesn't have to go to the polls until 2 weeks before the Federal election if they don't want to.

"Frequent high-speed rail service all day along Toronto, Pearson, Waterloo Region and London" - is the direct quote apparently. Whether that means true electric HSR or rather 200-250km/h diesel trains (achievable with straightened alignments & concrete ties) is unclear, but I suspect the latter.

Found the original source.

http://www.livestream.com/premierofontar...utm_source=lslibrary&utm_medium=ui-thumb. Skip ahead to 23:40. That's where Wynne gives all the big announcements.

HSR in Ontario (outside of Hamilton's use of the acronym)? Yay!

So are we talking about extending the Pearson train to London with a stop in Waterloo?
