Seems like an akward place to put them though. Going from the south tunnel portal to the north (via snake hill) seems difficult for large trucks transporting the rails. I would think there are far better places in the Port Moody area to store them.

I guess the reason why I am thinking rails could be part of the construction was in dpogue's pic, it seems they put the rails and its supporting bolts prior to a concrete pour...I guess that's how you do it in some circumstances. But its all speculation on my part...

I found an old blog about the Second Avenue Subway under construction in New York.

http://thelaunchbox.blogspot.ca/2011/01/view-down-below-january-23-2011.html

It shows the scale and complexity of building subways under NYC, and gives some ideas of how the Evergreen Tunnel will built (of course, everything is larger in NYC - even subway tunnel construction).
At the time when these photos were snapped, the first TBM tunnel (on the right of the launch-box) is still under construction, so they show the temporary tracks for the construction trains. The second tunnel (on the left) has it's starter segment ready for the TBM to start digging.

When the construction phase of these tunnels was finished, the temporary tracks were removed and the permanent subway tracks, power and signaling systems is being installed in the tunnels and stations.

and part II:

This new subway line extension is planned to be open in 2016

You think that is huge - check out the East Side Access project for New York - this is a project to bring Long Island Railroad trains into Grand Central Station. Massive tunnels and caverns being constructed under Manhattan.

Roof supports are now up at the west side of Lougheed station. By the look of the inverse-L shaped supports, seems like the final product would look like the rendering:

A friend of mine sent me this on the weekend:

http://www.equipmentworld.com/photos-ama...de-caverns-below-new-york-city/?pid=3399

yes - those are actual construction workers in the photo - just to get a a sense of the scale of this construction.

The first photo shows one of two caverns dug under Grand Central. Each of the four tunnel holes at the far end in the first photo will have a single track for trains to enter/exit the cavern.

Eventually these caverns will be filled with the upper and lower track platforms and with the access concourse level situated between the platform levels. There will be elevators, stairs and escalators to get up (or down) to the platforms from the concourse level.

On the sides of the caverns you can see the elevator / escalator access portals that will connect the concourse level to the Grand Central mezzanine above.

Estimated to be open by 2019.

Webcam pic of Port Moody Station
- you can see one guideway in place and the other being formed to the right (south).
It'll have a centre platform between the guideways, and the space from the CP line will be occupied by the WCE platform.

Inlet Centre Station Webcam:

Now it seems to me that the station actually looks more underground than at-grade or trenched..

Guideway repairs starting soon

Temporary Closure of Como Lake Avenue
Between Clarke Road and Elmwood Street

A section of the Evergreen Line elevated guideway, which moved off its temporary supports at Como Lake Road on March 14, 2014, will be repositioned and placed on its permanent supports starting April 12, 2014. Temporary closures of Como Lake Avenue between Clarke Road and Elmwood Street are required to safely complete this work.

Sounds like it's time for a Sidewalk Supervisors meet-up.

Thanks. After seeing that first picture with the two tracks rising out of Lougheed at different angles, I wonder why they didn't bother with the basketweave after all. It's just such an odd result that we'll be looking at for the next 40 years.

They probably decided that it was too expensive for what it was worth vs a few switches...

Of course, I don't think the contractors really took into account the fact that TransLink's abuse of switches is a part of the maintenance and reliability problem that we've been having of late. But oh well, that's TransLink's problem, right?

Who cares! Why is aesthetics so bloody important that you have to spend what little tax dollars we have?

This is what irked me about one of Translink's earlier plans where mayors would be forced to raise taxes but Translink would rather make the existing Skytrain stations pretty first (like what is happening now in Science World) than move forward with the Evergreen line.

While basketweave would have been nice, if saving money would mean moving forward to other transit expansion projects, then the current form of the Lougheed steel guideways are fine as well.

Besides, the only reason why it looked like that was because some NDP guy decided to add a hump on the Lougheed Station, then not move forward with building the Skytrain all the way to Coquitlam...blame him, not Translink or EGRT!

Ooooh we already had a good discussion a few pages back on the concerns of switch abuse, but it seems keeping the convoluted plan just to make the system idiot proof cuz...

Quote:
the general public won't notice or care about the switching, and as I noted, wrt wear & tear, there are already switches on the system (at the termini) that operate for every train.
