Could they not cover the wooden veil with some type of waterproff material?

In some of the renders is remember seeing wooden veils on west side covering the stairs

I'm not surprised at all. This is exactly what you get when you go half old and half new. And I'm certainly not outraged. I'm actually quite pleased that we will finally have a functional respectable facility. I am very unimpressed at the non-existent effort to incorporate some common design themes between new and old, but whatever.

The thing is, I think the people of Ottawa were sold a bag of goods here. This has been touted as something it simply isn't: world class. That was an easy sell back when people were desparate for anything "new". So desparatate that "refurbished" was good enough. Fittingly, that's exactly what it will end up being: good enough.

That's not hating. That's just telling it like it is.

^ Since they couldn't do a total rebuild of the north stand with the budget constraints would you have rather they build the south stands as boring, hard angled-steel to match more??

Right. The North Side stands and the Arena are integrated .

People often forget that they use the same steel beams to support both entities. Very difficult to build a completely new grandstand without tearing down much of the arena as well.

No brainer - yes. Like anything else, hard angles and steel can be made to work ... if you try hard enough. If you decide to keep half the stadium, then that's what you've got to work with. So using that as the starting point seems pretty logical to me. Why in the world would anyone introduce a completely new design theme on one side that cannot be mirrored on the other side? Even if that new theme is awesome (which I think it is), it will end up looking stupid (which I think it does).

Early on in the process, a couple of the unsuccessful concepts proved that a much more cohesive, integrated look could have been achieved. If I remember correctly, I believe one of them had a similar roof structure over both sides. There are things that can be done. Personally, I'd rather have the wood veil theme throughout. But more importantly, I'd rather have a common design throughout. That way, it wouldn't be so blatantly obvious that it's a refurbished patch job.

My recollection of it is that Lansdowne Park as a whole was to be considered "world class", not the stadium specifically.

Not suggesting that designs should be half-assed for that reason, mind you...Just that the description should be applied to the entire site.

Update April 18th

Pictures by me. Taken on Friday April 18th.

If any of you haven't been by here since they started construction boy are you in for a treat! Place looks completely different and very dense! Going to look great when it's all complete.

Signs said occupancy Fall 2014

Looks like there will be stairs leading from the sidewalk to the stadium. Looks nice!

It was pretty difficult to get pictures of the actual stadium! Plus I assumed that the City of Ottawa update with their behind the fences pictures would cover the stadium pretty well. It looked like the seats on the South Stands were almost done. I was more interested in the other portions of the project than the stadium because we really haven't seen many pictures of the condos or retail portions online. I was really surprised to see how far along construction is! Can't wait for July 18th Home Opener!

The retail part of Lansdowne is coming along.

The brick sidewalks from the renderings are officially out.

I hereby banish the phrase "world class" from the English language.

Should be banished from Ottawa; it's used to describe EVERYTHING. Hell, the Mayor describes the Confederation Line as "world class" one day and as a "Chevrolet" the next.

From everywhere.

Anything that's truly "world class" doesn't have to run around describing itself thus.

Anything that calls itself "world class" has a tacky case of boosterism at best, penis envy at worst.

There is thus no function for the phrase "world class". So it's banished.

You should also remove "Premium" "Gourmet" "Inspired" and a slew of other over-used words too...

Speaking of terminology, I'm tired of hearing the Lansdowne development referred to as an "urban village." It is in fact a strip mall, which is what you call a bunch of stores off a main street, with parking in front of the stores.

There is a retail portion of the plan that you might call a strip mall...but the project as a whole is actually an urban village. The retail takes up around 1/5th of the site, so why are you calling it a strip mall? There are places to live, work and play in the new plan. There are entertainment options, parks and recreation, public spaces and art...all the ingredients for an urban village. What would you change about the retail portion to make it less like a 'strip mall'?

Even Le Viu calls itself luxury. Unbelievable.
