Does anybody have a photo of what this side of downtown used to look like? It would be interesting to see some before and after pictures.

I'm sure these are a bit older than what you were asking for but this is what the intersection of 5th and Lamar looked like back in the 50s. You can see the railroad crossing on Lamar so it's before the underpass was built.

Except for the RR underpass and the Whole Foods/Book People development on the corner of 6th and Lamar, this part of town did not look a whole lot different from these photos until around 1998 or 1999 when things started popping in the area.

Man that view sure has changed. I especially like going up there in the evening just as the sun sets. The skyline always looks good there.

I totally disagree. I'm pleasantly surprised. I thought it was going to be dark and soulless, but the brick lightens it up and gives it some Life, IMO.

I see they're painting the parking garage portion. I really hope they're still planning on covering that thing up. That part looks bad, as it is.

I don't know. I'm not a fan of broken lines of different colors. Look at the other buildings that are that way that we really dislike - Ashton, Hilton, Hyatt Place, etc. I'd rather it be all glass or have a broader area of the brick facade. The Monarch and Spring basically are the same color as The Bowie, but the way they did those facades with a broader area of the stone material just jives better with the design of those buildings. 360 is the only one that it looks good on, and mostly because it's emphasizing the building's verticality.

Everyone's apparent favorite building, the Frost Tower, has broken lines of different colors. Practically the same colors, in fact. It has the potential to look really good. I think everyone will like the building a lot more once they see the finished product.

According to the below rendering, the little side extension part is going to be ending after one more floor. That will probably speed up the construction a little. That also means we're getting awfully close to this baby topping out. I wonder, could we see people moving in by the end of the summer?

I'm also excited to see what kind of lighting it will have.

I think they're working on getting up the last floor of that portion jutting out. After that, they have 5 more floors plus the stuff on top.

If they paint it white like that, then yes, it'll look very good. And yes, that is what I like about 360 and Frost is the glass and white accents.

according to one of the head construction workers (who came through my line at WF) the top will be filled with lots and lots of plants. I tried to ask about lighting, but he walked away too fast. It looks like that top sharp edge/crown is all glass. I can't imagine why it wouldn't be lit all around. The Bowie is such a fucking beautiful project. They have interiors on their site: BowieAustin.com

I think the problem with the current brick facade is the yellowish tint of the limestone like brick in small quantities. If the facade were broader, it wouldn't appear that way to the same degree. I also think the detail of the brick is just lost at the distance most people are viewing this building. Maybe if there was more contrast between the brick and mortar, I am not sure.
