Interesting look at the loss of Destination Maternity in the Spring Garden-Callowhill DMZ.

Seeing Destination Maternity's departure as an opportunity
Maria Panaritis, Inquirer Staff Writer

Philadelphia will lose more than 600 jobs when homegrown Destination Maternity Corp. leaves its headquarters at Fifth and Spring Garden Streets for South Jersey. But unlike other gloomy portraits of corporations defecting to the suburbs, this one may have a silver lining for the city.

Diverse proposals are emerging to buy the retailer's headquarters and distribution complex, a colossal parcel of nearly eight acres in an industrial-zoned enclave that has changed little as neighboring Old City and Northern Liberties grew into upscale residential communities over the last two decades.

Also, some store called Century 21 that apparently does not sell homes might replace the Kmart in the Gallery?

Interesting on both accounts - hate to see jobs moving - at least staying in the metro

And would love a C21 - to me that would really be a sort of game changer for the Gallery - a new set of folks that otherwise may have never ventured there. In fact a C21 may draw people not only from the city but the burbs that otherwise made trips to NYC for C21

much better quality - more like a poor mans version of Nordstroms but better than a rack. H&M is more trendy to younger demographic C21 hits both younger and older demographics. Sort of like mini higher end department store with better prices and more european selections IMHO. Would be a new store/offering than exists in Philly

Century 21

HAHAHA you know, I was thinking for a long time about how Century 21 would be just the thing for Market East. I've been in the C21 in Lower Manhattan (opposite the WTC site) a few times, *ALWAYS* crowded every time (even after a large expansion recently) and their store in Paramus NJ seems quite busy as well.

This would be much better in the Strawbridges building IMO. Weren't they saying the Kmart space was going to be turned into a continuation of the mall corridor with smaller stores/restaurants? That would be much better for circulation (Kmart is currently down to the bottom floor only but the upper level is being kept as a pass through)

Anyway, I hope that this rumor is true and C21 does open here. Who knows, if they are successful they could open in the former Sears in upper Darby and the old JC Penny near Roosevelt mall. Wishful thinking at least....

Philadelphia's future in the numbers

Homicide statistics are down, as are those for poverty and joblessness. The most telling tally? An increase in building permits for housing.

I found this story interesting and a similar conversion could happen to some other malls in the area too:

In Voorhees, reinventing the mall

Echelon Mall, built in 1970 and remade as a "lifestyle center" after hard times, keeps adapting.

He said some of PREIT's Philadelphia properties, including Plymouth Meeting and Exton Square Malls, were under consideration for a similar conversion.

Please don't crucify me for taking such a cursory look at some statistics but after reading about crime and
other factors , i.e. poverty / school enrollment decline .... I am bewildered by the murder rate in this city .

New York , L.A. , Chicago , and Houston , all with much larger populations than Philly , all appear to have
a lower murder rate . That fact .... if correct , might have something to do with the poverty level in Philly .
....( The highest of the above mentioned cities . )

Which in turn may have something to do with problems in the education system , or other factors
that may be lacking such as job training or health care or other issues not mentioned here .

I have been in six of the eight largest cities in this country , and another half dozen of Europe's largest
cities ..... but keep returning to this one ..... It's jobs , baby . Well paying , secure jobs .

I live right down the street from Voorhees Town Center. It is a big improvement with the restaurants. I am excited to hear about the possibility of a new hotel and that they are going forth with adding more apartments.

Oh nice! I spent so many afternoons at the Echelon Mall growing up. It was sad to see it start emptying out, and though I was dubious when they started putting townhouses and condos and shops outside the mall in the middle of a parking lot, I now realize they were going right along with the times. And it's a 4 minute drive/20 minute walk from the Ashland PATCO station, making it sorta vaguely TODish. I'm glad it's doing well. They did something similar to the Cinemark plaza at Evesham and Route 30, which is also close to Ashland. http://www.njspotlight.com/stories/14/03...and-office-parks-a-second-lease-on-life/

1528 Cherry St- 17 floors

7 floors of office space, 9 floors of residential

REALLY annoying that it doesn't cover the entire parking lot

Facade of 1528 Cherry looks like a 15 story doily. I guess it is good infill for the area, sad the parking lot isn't gone though. Overall a step in the right direction though.

It's not covering the parking lot because it's not being built on the parking lot, it looks like it will be build where two blue painted rows stand right now.
