No apologies required Shilo. The design of this building is perplexing to say the least coming from the firm that recently gave us the Indigo and the Eliot. Given that it will easily be one of the more prominent structures in the Pearl, at some 300 ft., one has to wonder why the result is so uninspired. It almost seems as though the notion of rotating the building exhausted all their creative energy. Perhaps I'm being too harsh. Another prominent structure coming soon, BOORA's Park Central, will I think eclipse this dud in more than just height.

North Pearl: Going Up?

The Pearl District's north end is shaping up to house some of the tallest housing projects in Portland history.

Even if all eight residential buildings planned for the area known as the North Pearl are built, longtime neighborhood advocate Patricia Gardner thinks the neighborhood still won’t add enough units. “Each leaves three or four floors on the table,” she says of sizes the developers could build to, but are choosing not to. “Together, that’s a whole building not being built.”

When the PDC first created the River District Urban Renewal Area (now more commonly known as the Pearl District) in 1994, it envisioned 5,500 apartments, condos, and town houses. As of 2013, 9,085 units had been built, most in buildings six stories or shorter. But as the district marched north of NW Lovejoy Street, the city—with the Pearl District Neighborhood Association’s blessing—completely removed height limits. “We wanted to embrace urbanity,” says Gardner.

There's Patricia Gardner yet again speaking exclusively for the whole neighborhood with her stacked committees of hand picked yes wo/men to rubber stamp her personal desires. 'We' as in Patricia. Pearl District Neighborhood Association?... more like Patricia Gardner Neighborhood Association.

Without knowing anything about the internal politics of the PDNA, it seems to me pretty reasonable that the chair of the neighborhood association would speak on behalf of the neighborhood association. Would you care to elaborate on your point? I'm genuinely curious.

Williams/Dame's new Residence Inn by Marriott opens Friday in the Pearl District

The first major new hotel in Portland since 2009, and the first in the Pearl District, opens its doors on Friday.

The six-story, 233-room Residence Inn by Marriott was developed by Homer Williams and Dike Dame’s Williams/Dame & Associates and EB5 Global, Williams’ company to facilitate investment thorough the EB-5 immigrant investor program.

Through the program created by Congress in 1990, about 90 Chinese citizens invested $500,000 each. In exchange for an equity investment in a job-creating business, the government grants green cards for the investor and their family

I went down there yesterday, and I *really* liked the perforated yellow metal element in the pic above. Haven't seen such eye-popping colors and contrast in any buildings in this city that can remotely compare. However, odd choice for a hotel!

Not sure about the yellow wall in the courtyard tho - they kind of overdid it.

Speaking of hotels in The Pearl, does anybody know anything about the hotel that was planned for the Real World site?

While digging around for that thing, I came across two pre-app conference notices (1 and 2) for the lots at either end of the Riverscape apartments. Nothing terribly exciting there.
