Ben Mcadams said the target year for the CCH is in 2017. He must know something we don't and the wheels must be in full motion for him to have less of a four year timeline.

Just a quick clarification on the BYUSL and LDS Business College. The master plan for the future expansion of those two schools is only one block, not four. The parking lot/Medals Plaza block is the block that, in the past, the LDS Church had slated for BYU SL and LDS Business College.

Both schools continue to grow in enrollment, which is why they are both at the Triad Center. The both they moved from smaller locations.

Looks like new retail is moving in on the ground level of the Ken Garth building on 400 s. and Main. No clue as to what.

I like dm tower's last suggested layout for the cch best so far. I like that it directs conventioneers towards gateway and develops a great pedestrian friendly area for them after the convention activities end for the day. Conventioneers will spend time at city creek without as direct a link because visitors to salt lake always want to check out temple square. The enhanced japantown and streets (100 s. And 170 s) will bring the gateway to their attention, too, and added development that caters to conventioneers along 200 s and on the block west of 300 w will strengthen the salt palace as a convention center. One addition to consider would be to extend meeting space onto the se corner of s temple and 300 w, connecting the already existing s temple hotel (a radioson I think) to the sp.

Looks like the Comic Con is back on the 17th of April. I had no idea it was so soon. Has it really been a year since the last one?

The Comic Con event this month is the Comic Con FanXperience - kind of like a Comic Con Lite... April 17 - 19. The full-blown Comic Con is scheduled for September 4-6.

This kind of annoys me, I don't think the site was clear about there being multiple cons Why have two different shows other than to get $100 twice? Unless tickets are good both events. When I bought my tickets for April a few months ago I thought this was awfully soon after the last one, and now to see there's another show in September. Greedy, Greedy, just like last year when they oversold and created such poor attending conditions and left people outside for hours, it didn't affect me so much because I was able to get in on Thursday and had my credentials for Friday and Saturday but conditions were terrible.

Now to see there's another $100 add on for the Star Trek panel... I've been to Cons all over the place and SLCs is the biggest racket. I guess that why they call it a con.

What? No Sunday? Sundays at other shows is THE day to go, less crowds and good deals for purchases.

I don't think it's fair to call this a Comic-Con-lite. Maybe that's what it was intended to be when they started out, but this one is every bit as big as the one in September. They're estimating attendance to be over 60,000, and they have more celebrities and personalities booked than last time. They also have more exhibit space, and have added a film festival that will be screening at the Gateway. This will be just as crazy as the last one.

Agree Scott, After reading this article seems like they're on track to break ever new records. I would definitely be interested in attending the panel involving members of "The Walking Dead".

Salt Lake Comic Con announces its panels

Vince Horiuchi - The Salt Lake Tribune

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/money/57752969-79/comic-con-salt-convention.html.csp

...The spring Salt Lake Comic Con event, called FanX, has announced its roster of panel discussions, and they range from the practical for the burgeoning genre artist to the absolutely bizarre...

...The three-day event, which will be held April 17 through 19 at the Salt Palace Convention Center in downtown Salt Lake City, is expected to bring nearly 100,000 attendees total.

The first Salt Lake Comic Con destroyed record attendance for Utah conventions. By drawing between 70,000 and 80,000 people on just its last day alone, the convention was the largest first-time Comic Con in the U.S. ever and the biggest convention of any type in Utah.

The FanX event will host a new roster of celebrities including William Shatner, who will host a panel discussion with other "Star Trek" actors, and cast members of the popular "The Walking Dead" television show...

OR and Comic Con 2 times a year. Sounds good to the hotel industry to me. Yes many going to Comic Con will be locals but as it gains popularity more people come from outside Utah or those in Utah that live to far away to drive home and drive back for the next day.

I would be curious to know if they have a feel for those figures Steve. It would be interesting to know how many of those 100,000 are from out of state, and are looking for overnight accommodations. With such a large number of people attending, there must be a fairly sizable amount of people from out of town.

Hey Jedikermit, will you be helping anyone with a LEGO display again for a booth at this Comic Con?

Delts, I too would like to see some statistics on where people are coming from for this event. Also wouldn't mind seeing the information on how booked the hotels were during those days in Salt Lake City/County.

^^^^

I'll be there much of the time manning an enormous LEGO display with some friends; it will be interesting to see how their numbers hold up. I agree that it seems like it's too soon and a cash grab by the organizers. I also think there's some kind of pent-up demand for that kind of geek culture event in Utah/mountain west that drew so many people in September.

I really don't think twice a year is sustainable. If it is, good for them, good for the downtown economy (I hope). Anecdotally, a lot of the people I talked to last year were from out of state, including a large contingent from Texas (?) who simply came because the guests were that big of a draw. I can see the one in a few weeks drawing big crowds for the entire Star Trek: The Next Generation crew (save Patrick Stewart) , in a panel moderated by William Shatner. And yeah, it's an extra hundred bucks, for for True Devotees, it'd be worth it.

Not me. I'll be playing with LEGO.

Sigh.

Can Khosrow Semnani apply his magic touch to Trolley Square?

Retail experience » Salt Lake City’s venerable trolley barns have suffered tough times.

Utah industrialist Khosrow Semnani likes success — and he expects it.

The self-made millionaire who pioneered the disposal of low-level radioactive waste in Tooele County in the late 1980s is now applying his business acumen to Salt Lake City’s historic Trolley Square.

The venerable retail center has suffered its share of tough times, including a February 2007.........

Market Street Broiler near U. closes, goes up for sale
Historic building » Owners made decision after evaluating the eatery’s performance.

Kathy Stephenson
The Salt Lake Tribune
Published Apr 01 2014

Quote:
After more than 30 years in business, the Market Street Broiler near the University of Utah has closed its doors, and the historic building where it was located has been put up for sale.

Monday was the last day of business at the Broiler, which had just opened an Oyster Bar upstairs in February.

---

In mid-February, the Broiler opened a small upstairs Oyster Bar, making it the only club within walking distance of the U. It had waited more than a year for the license from the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

If a bar or restaurant decided to take over the spot, the state liquor commission could award the license to the new owners, said UDABC spokeswoman Vickie Ashby. Gastronomy also could relinquish the license back to the state and one of the 12 current applicants — some of whom have waited more than a year — could get it.

I noticed that the governor has yet to sign HB 356, the law that allows for a convention center hotel. Today is the deadline to sign or veto any laws. Am I correct in that if he doesn't sign it by today, but doesn't veto it, it becomes law? You can see all the bills that have passed and been signed here: http://le.utah.gov/asp/passedbills/passedbills.asp
