I had a friend that used to live in Plaza 88. The elevator wait was unbelievable.

It also depends on how high speed the elevators are. 2 high speed elevators can work in a 30 storey building - but if one is down for a move, then the remaining 1 elevator still creates long wait times.

40-odd floors iirc. It's only 42 floors, but they chop out each floor with a 4 in it, so it's billed as being like 46ish floors tall.

And each building only has 2 elevators. Plus 8 (?) floors of parking.

Fire hazard. A long vertical pipe is just what fire needs to spread from floor to floor instead of being contained in the space where it starts.

There are buildings with garbage chutes here, Shaw Tower is probably one of the last though. In the age of recycling/separate streams, garbage chutes don't work well. Not to mention they never worked great because of clogs, leaks and yes fire/smoke. All it takes is one idiot to throw a cigarette down the chute to fill the building with smoke.

I used to live in a 6-floor "high-rise" in Ottawa and that building had 2 elevators (...and even a garbage chute on each floor, which I still haven't seen anywhere in GVA). So that works out to 3-floors per elevator lol. No underground parking either, so there wasn't even any basement floors.

Garbage chutes = rats and infestations + huge fire hazard. Fire can spread between floors in seconds. That's why they aren't built anymore. Don't expect to see any built ever in a modern building.

Yes and rats/infestation. There wasn't a building in the west end years ago with garbage chutes that didn't have cockroaches or rats. Probably still have them today.

I think that vacant lot has been bought up and has a few towers slated for it.

City approved this to be built in that spot. 46 storey tower unnamed project as of right but I'm sure we'll hear a bit more mid year when Park Avenue West (2) starts selling.

Oh that's cool!! So two towers. It's hard imagining the orientation with that render. Looks like they placed the buildings in the middle of an orchard!

^^God, I'm glad we don't get such appalling slab buildings in Vancouver (referring to Nautilus). Could you imagine that kind of 40-storey going up somewhere on Vancouver's waterfront?

I'll be honest I would like some larger floor plate buildings in the metro area. That being said they do have to be in the appropriate areas and the downtown waterfront is not one of them.
