So what's the solution - demolish the 10,000 hockey arena under the north stadium?

You know what? There are some places that would have done just that. There are some places in the world that have a "go big or go home" cutting edge mindset. I'm not saying we should concern ourselves with keeping up with the Jones'. I'm just saying let's be honest with ourselves about what we're producing. This will be an okay refurbished facility. Respectable. Functional. Fine. But there are some people around here who are already standing up giving it the slow clap. Whoa, whoa.

And by the way that arena has all kinds of structural problems that were discovered during construction. Not to mention the fact that it is every bit as dated and aesthetically offensive as the half stadium that awkwardly sits on top of it. It's not exactly in the architecture hall of fame.

Hey, always good to see someone willing to open their wallet and give some of their hard earned tax money away, rather than those NIMBYs who sit back and delay progress.

Problem is you would need to find another $100 million to demolish those stands and the arena underneath and build a new set of stands. Then you would need another $100 million or more to build a 10,000 seat junior hockey rink. Then you have to decide where to build this rink on top of that. Would have been hard to procure that much money for this project. I'm sure it was hard enough as it was.

Let’s see, a new velodrome coming and this may push it faster. Upgrades for Triathalon. Upgraded or new pool. Major upgrades to the Stadium. New shooting range. And depending on which sports get added new facilities for that. Hoping we can get rowing and canoeing back in the games so Telford Lake can get the necessary upgrades.

Well, they just did a refurbishment of Commonwealth these past couple years.

Would love to see them expand that soccer facility in Edmonton. Didn't Clarke Stadium get an expansion to 5,000 or so seats for their NASL soccer team recently? Maybe they can double the size permanently for soccer at the Commonwealth games.

Wonder what kind of world class swimming pool Edmonton has? Maybe this will allow them to build a pool open to the general public but also seating a few thousand people for World Cup diving and swimming events.

You know what? There are some places that don't get a third shot at a pro sports team. An ok refurb facility for the newest incarnation of pro football in Ottawa is more then adequate. How about not having a team fold before you start going big or home.

(I think it's much better than an ok refurb. Looks great, both sides.)

Worth hypothesizing, but it will be very geo-politically difficult to defeat Durban as there is a South African bid as well. The games have yet to see that continent and Durban easily has the capacity.

There's good reasons to bid...it just seems unlikely this round.

The city of Edmonton is officially competing in a $1-billion, two-horse race to get the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Alberta has signed off on a letter of intent from the city in a $7-million bid to host the games, joining Durban, South Africa. The letter was sent an hour before the deadline.

"Our city's successful history as a great event host city started with the 1978 Commonwealth Games. Hosting the games in 2022 will demonstrate to the world how much Edmonton has evolved and reflect the Commonwealth Games Federation's confidence in our city," said Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson.

City Manager Simon Farbrother said South Africa is an emerging nation coming off hosting the 2010 World Cup and will be formidable competition.

"We didn't go into there to come in second," Farbrother said.

The city has been mulling over a bid since 2012.

"These are significant bids in terms of the dollars involved, and as a city we were committed, but we also wanted to make sure the provincial government was committed to the bid," Farbrother said. "That has been confirmed by the premier."

When asked which premier signed off the letter, Farbrother replied, "the current one." That would be interim Premier Dave Hancock.

Now that the letter has been sent, the city will speak with the province as well as national and provincial sporting organizations.

Commonwealth Stadium, built to replace Clarke stadium ahead of the 1978 games, has recently undergone renovations to host another international event.

Other facilities built to host the games include the Kinsmen Aquatic Centre, Commonwealth Bowls, Argyll Velodrome and the Strathcona Shooting Range.

"The bicycle track for example needs a complete rebuild," said Farbrother. "Some of the firing ranges are 30, 40 years old, but some of our other assets we've continued to keep up. I think we will be looking at an upgrade to Kinsmen rather than a new facility."

But sports facilities aren't the only infrastructure to come with hosting the games. The first LRT line was also built for the games. He said the need to move people in an effective fashion, reinforces the need for multiple modes of transportation.

"It's really an opportunity to build legacy upon legacy," he said.

Commonwealth Stadium is designed in a way that will work for the opening and closing ceremonies. Athletics will be hosted at Foote Field.

Hancock said the games are a great opportunity for Alberta.

"With more than 70 participating countries and 4,000 athletes participating, hosting the Commonwealth Games is a valuable opportunity to showcase Alberta on the international stage. "

The city expects the province to cough up $800,000, while Edmonton will pay for 20%.

Legacy funding from the province may be available, he said.

"We would not have gone ahead with the bid unless we had a comfort level from the province," said Farbrother.

No money is expected federally, but the city will continue to ask.

"Both Brisbane and Glasgow bid with the support of their states, and in Brisbane's case their federal government came in with funding after the decision," Farbrother said.

The Edmonton Economic Development Corporation says hosting international sporting events is part of the city's economic strategy.

"This event will showcase Edmonton's passion for sport and culture of volunteerism to the world, and the economic impact of new infrastructure, jobs and a boost in tourism is an incredible opportunity for our region," said Edmonton Economic Development President and CEO Brad Ferguson.

Farbrother said Brisbane is expecting a $2-billion return from their games.

A delegation will have official observer status at this year's Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

The deadline for bids is March 2015. The winning city will be announced in September 2015.

Council set to OK BMO Field expansion
Don Peat City Hall Bureau Chief Toronto Sun March 31, 2014

TORONTO - The Ford brothers seem to be the only ones on council lining up against the BMO Field expansion.

City council is being asked this week to approve Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment’s $120-million expansion of the stadium. The deal calls for a $10-million loan from the City of Toronto.

Mayor Rob Ford has raged against the deal, calling it “corporate welfare,” but councillors on all sides of the political spectrum were heading into Tuesday’s council meeting ready to vote for it.

A city staff report released Monday revealed MLSE has agreed to commit $200,000 to help alleviate congestion or traffic issues at Exhibition Place as part of the project.

MLSE is asking for $10 million each from all three levels of government to add almost 10,000 seats to the stadium along with a partial roof and an extended field that could accommodate the Toronto Argonauts.

Councillor Gord Perks said it’s a better deal than what the city has now so he’ll be supporting it.

“I think any business person or football fan — or person who just loves Toronto — would support it,” Perks said Monday. “And if you don’t support it, you’re not a good business person, you’re not a football fan, you don’t seem to care about public opinion.”

Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong summed up the BMO Field deal as a good arrangement.

“A $90-million investment on city-owned property for a very small investment of $10 million,” Minnan-Wong said. “When a company invests in a city asset, I don’t believe that’s corporate welfare.”

Councillor Doug Ford said he, like the mayor, remains opposed to the deal.

“It just doesn’t make any business sense,” he said. “They are profitable organizations.”

He accused MLSE of “bully tactics” when it comes to the push for BMO Field and wouldn’t rule out he and the mayor may be the only ones to vote against the idea.

“That’s alright,” he said. “What else is new down here.”

If this isn't proof that the athletics track serves no purpose in Edmonton nothing will. Commonwealth Stadium should eventually be altered to meet the needs of its primary tenant, the Eskimos.

What a waste if they don't use CommonWealth Stadium for the track and field events presuming Edmonton wins of course. I mean, what the hell else are they keeping it for otherwise? Is it at least used for city and provincial track and field?
