I agree with Comrade. By the time they pick a developer, a site, and an architect, this could very well take a year or more depending on the developer and site procurement situation. Then another one or two years for design review, & construction documents. Then another two years for construction. I give this 2018 at the very earliest. They could speed things up if they do this as a fast track process and start building the foundations, etc. while the rest of the building design, details, etc. are finalized. We also have to recognize that there could very possibly be law suits against the state that will stall this. Portland is facing that problem right now.

I believe most of that has already happened behind closed doors while we all waited for the bill to pass during the last year or so. I believe a site is already chosen and the develop might be down to two or three to pick from.
We already got info from an inside source telling us on here that once the bill pass ( and it did a few weeks ago ) that this development will be on the fast track and that we could learn a lot more about this in the coming month or two with a ground breaking by the end of the year.

I love this! The Japanese peace garden would make the perfect quiet space, in the otherwise busy conventioneers schedule. This small, mini park idea, interestingly, is very common in Tokyo and other big Japanese cites. It would a truly genius way to bring all that space together harmoniously.

I like it Old & New. Love the idea of the Japanese gate over the street and the pagoda in the peace garden. That would be very cool!
I like your idea of J street, but I think it would be wise to keep 100 south running in straight line, and maybe just rearrange the park a bit.

I like the concept Old & New, but how dare you throw a curved street into downtown.

I assume dock access would be accomplished via 200 W and S. Temple and that there would be underground docks under the new convention space. The only issue I see with it is that it doesn't provide a whole lot of additional large hall expo space.

Just looking at these pics of projects posted by EPdesign the other day. Very enthusiastic about the density and infill finally going up in this area...And now the Marriott is going up too!

By curving 100 South, it allowed more park space north of the street to help hide the north loading docks. It also allowed me to place the pagoda directly in the center of 100 South, creating a focal point down a 100 south view corridor, distracting the eye from the back side of the convention center. Also, trees planted down a curvy 100 South would do wonders as far as hiding the backside of the convention center from the vantage point of 100 South and West Temple. .

The curvy street really wouldn't have to be that wide. Although any potential hotel convention space lost for the street could be compensated with an expansion of the salt palace itself (like in the sketch-up).

But you know Old&New, Cutting those inner blocks up with curvy streets and beautiful piazzas is exactly what Salt Lake City needs to do more of now. The grid pattern is great, but we need to shake up those inner blocks.

Imagine blocking off "J" street for an annual Cherry Blossom festival or other type of street faire! I think Old&New has come up with a brilliant, uniting suggestion the entire SLC forum could get behind! Color me impressed...



Almost forgot... they put in that mid-block curving driveway/street in CityCreek that runs around Cheesecake Factory... So this wouldn't technically be the first curvy mid-block byway...

This is very cool. Beer Bar, Bar X, and Johnny's will all be in a row. Would love to see this area develop into a hopping night life District.

Here is one of the larger Japanese Torii Gates I saw in Japan that went over a road. We would need a pretty big one for the width of the street.

I don't think the new road ("Motsumoto" Street, or "J-Way" (if you will)) would need to be any wider than the street in that picture. Also, that's HUGE! I pictured something a bit smaller than that... But something similar would be very cool!

I like to see people getting creative with SLC's infamously large blocks. Speaking of the convention center hotel, I think you would be surprised to know how little has actually been finalized. Because the project is utilizing government funds the selection process must be very transparent and it hasn't even begun. Specific hotel operators have expressed their interest in bidding for the project but that is about it at this point. The city and the county haven't even figured out their specific roles in the process. If they are going to have a completed hotel in 2017 then they really need to start moving.
